I was at our local sporting goods chain tonight while waiting for my take-out. I rarely buy stuff in there, but they occasionally have something interesting. Lately they've been running a "sale" on 12 and 20 gauge STS and AA ammunition - $4.99 a box or $4.48 if you buy 10. The ads specifically state 12 or 20 gauge only.

Tonight I was wandering through the gun stuff and saw that the AA sign is gone, but the STS sign is still there. Then I notice that the STS sign is hanging under the .410 ammunition. It says "Remington STS Target Loads - $4.99 a box or $4.48 with purchase of 10 boxes". There's no disclaimer about shell size. It's covering the .410 price. So I ask the sales manager in the area. He looks at the sign and says "it doesn't say anything about no .410, so I'll give you that price". I ask him if he's sure, because I'm about to buy him out of .410. He says he's sure, they'll just send him a couple more boxes.

I bought a full case - 20 boxes. Out the door for less than $100. I figure even if I won't reload them (I've got several thousand old-style Win AA .410 hulls), I can always dump the hulls on eBay.

Check those signs - I believe legally they have to give you the price on the shelf. Hopefully they won't have the sign fixed before they get in some 28 ga...

Early this year a guy here pulled one better than that----I think. WalMart had a sale on on steel loads, $5 a box, everything.

He cleaned 3 stores out, then went to Gander with his receipts, they say they will match plus on anything, the store manager called a WM manager to make sure things were on the up and up.

He said OK, but he sure didn't like-----the guy bought $1900+ worth of steel loads as fast as he could load them into carts, every length of 12 and 10 gauge. I saw one box that $27 for 10, I imagine Gander lost a chunk of change on that deal----I couldn't have done it and slept.

That guy says he isn't very welcome at Gander anymore, but, I guess a deal is a deal. Thing is, this guy isn't hurting for money in the least.

I could have -- and not lost a wink of sleep. It would help make up for some of the times stores have screwed me over.

Deals like that might be how he got that way.

I bet he'll never stop chuckling or telling that story.

A deal like that would make my year.

No, it is one of the reasons he does as much as he does though. That idea might also work well in the "screw someone else before they screw you" world, but it doesn't do a thing to instill trust in your friends-----------that is, if he has any.

It isn't logical to me that anyone got screwed on that deal, TT, or that the guy's conscience has anything to lose sleep over..

Wal-Mart put the shells on sale, apparently with no quantity limits. He simply took advantage of the sale prices.

Gander Mountain advertised it would meet any competitor's current price, with no caveat that the offer didn't apply to sale prices. He simply held them to their claim.

What's he got to lose sleep over?

Well, I don't expect to lose any sleep either.
I'm sure it's Dick's Sporting Goods that 59Bassman knocked over, and today I did too.

In their Sunday flyer they advertised "AA or STS Premier Grade Target Loads" on sale for $4.99 a box, case price $4.49 a box (10 boxes or more). No mention of gauge anywhere. The first Dick's had 3 flats, and sheepishly I walked up to the counter with all of 'em. Oh, they rang up at $7.49, but after showing the manager their flyer, he agreed that $4.49 was the "correct price".

Off to store #2. I've had a rain check from this store for almost 2 months, waiting for 6 flats of 20 ga. #8 Remy Game Loads. They advertise them EVERY week, and never have any. I even complained to their corporate HQ. The local manager called me and assured me they would have them by last Friday. Yeah, right. He finally decided to offer me 6 flats of the Gun Clubs at the same price, $2.98 a box. I also scored 3 more flats of the $4.49 AA .410's, plus 8 boxes from the display. The cashier just shook his head and muttered something about what a mess their Sunday flyers are.

Early on I didn't have much use for Dick's Sporting Goods, but I'm beginning to appreciate them more and more, especially as they continue their plunge into previously unexplored depths of ineptitude.

Insider trading tip... I wouldn't buy stock in this company! I can hardly wait for the "Going Out Of Bidness" sale!

I almost wished I needed 28's too.

Here's how I see it, and I am the guy that will drive back across town when some little gal that should know better, gave a $ too much in change.

He picked up 11 total boxes from WalMart, all the three stores had on the shelves. Took three receipts to Gander (which is out of town by the way) and bought (near as I can figure) 385 boxes of shells, some of which I bet cost Gander $20+ apiece.

The Steel shells he bought from WalMart were el cheapo Winchester steel in the silver boxes, those he carted out of Gander were Federal and Remington Premium non tox loads, but steel.

I like Gander being here, they keep Academy and Walmart on their toes, but I wonder how long the price match deal will stay, or the store stay if they were hit with many of those.

If I took away a great service to the community in such a way, yes, I would lose sleep over it-----he would never bat an eye. That is my opinion---make of it what you wish.

Okay, I agree it was an indecent thing to do, but Gander Mountain should have sense enough to make it clear their match-the-competition price does not apply to competitors' sale items.

It's really pretty standard practice. I've seen many instances of that caveat on those offers.

I used to love Gander Mountain and bought a ton of stuff from them before they sold their mailorder division to overpriced Cabela's.

And, Mark... Guess you won't be hanging around the old reloading bench much for awhile, eh?

Store rapist.

Well I followed your advice and p/u 2 flats of AA 410 for 44.90 per flat there today.

The Dick's in Greensboro would not honor the flyer sale price on the STS's in 28 or .410's. The manager said it only applied to the 12's an 20 ga's.

Nowhere, an I mean nowhere, does it say anything about what gauges are on sale in the flyer.

The manager said that was his policy.........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This one of the reason's I DO NOT LIKE dicks.

ShootingStar just had to mention Dick's ineptitude. You know how you are supposed to get 10% off when you buy a whole flat? Last time we were in we were buying two flats. We buy enough ammo there, we knew what the price should have been and it was considerably less. I looked at the register and he had taken 20% off. I tried to tell him that the group discount should only be 10%. He said that "no, you get 10% per flat and that is 20%." He even called the lead cashier over and she said that was right. Next time I think we'll buy 10 flats and see if they give us 100% off.

When I bought the 410s I also got another case of the remington game loads that are 2.98 per box. The clerk did not give me the 10% discount on that flat - I let that one slide :) I figure the other $60 in discounts made up for it....

I went back and noticed that the flyer also covered AA's, as listed here. Dick's had 25 boxes of 28 ga. I left them there. I know I said if I could find 28's, but I was reminded by SWMBO that Christmas is coming.

And for those who hate the stores, you should know that in Knoxville, the Dick's is near a fabric store and an office supply shop.

Until they recently changed it, the sign said "Joanne Staples Dicks." I'm not kidding.

As in every weekly flyer for at least the last month, they have 'em on sale, but this Sunday's flyer clearly lists a "REG." price of $4.99, where last weeks was left blank. Especially that little omission, and no mention of gauges, made all the difference.

You ain't gonna believe this one, but I swear it's true...

Last weekend my son and I went out to shoot some skeet, but when the rains came, we cut it short and stopped off at a Gander Mountain store to explore the used gun rack. Hanging from the ceiling all over the store are big, bright banners announcing their new (or maybe just new to me) price match policy.

We also check out the shotshell section. Hmmmmm...

I just happened to have in my wallet, my receipt from the "Great Dick's Sporting Goods Heist" earlier, so with 5 flats of .410 and 28 ga. AA's we head to the checkout counter for a test.

I plop down my proof and the 5 flats. Counter Girl looks it all over and begins filling out price match forms. I get the debit card out, hoping I'll be sliding out the door shortly with 50 more of those cute little boxes of AA's for somewhat less than $250.

She starts keying stuff in and tells me she can only give back $50 max per transaction. HUH?
She spins the screen around and shows me a total of $78.60, but this can't be right. She's obviously having a little trouble ringing this up. I'm confused. I told her the total should be $44.90 a flat + tax, and she points to the big banner overhead. She says I also get back an amount "equal to the difference", and since I'm saving exactly $30 a flat on the price match, I'm entitled to an additional $30 back... yup, per flat. WHAT??!! According to her, the rules dictate the maximum they can "double match" is $50 per transaction, but I'm still confused and she's determined to see that I get all $150.

I told her, look, all I wanted was the price match, and again, this can't be right. My 29-year-old son kicks me in the shin as Counter Girl assures me that "it's Gander Mountain's policy", and I guess my duty as a customer, to take their money. I don't want to see her get fired over this, and I'm trying to do the right thing, but she's persistent. Still, one credit card transaction puts "only" an additional 50 bucks in my hand.

I then suggest five separate sales, and she likes that idea. Now she says she needs to check with the manager for approval. Oh NO, I'm DOOMED! It's been 15-20 minutes, the line is 10 deep behind me, looking MEAN, and I'm thinking all this sh!t was for NOTHING!!! She calls the manager, describes the deal, and amazingly he gives her the OK. Now she starts ringing up 10-box flats at $15.72 each. FIVE times!

At this point I decide cash is a better option and I put the debit card away.

Two minutes later we're loading $78.60 worth of AA's into the truck and half expecting the local cops to show up with Mossbergs drawn. My son briefly entertains the idea of going back in and making another buy, but we soon agree that would be foolish.

You would have thought the "We have the right to limit quantities" part of their price matching policy would have minimized the damage to the Mountain, but NOOOOooo. I swear, I tried NOT to take their money, but they MADE me do it!
