This form of waterfowling has been around since atleast the market hunting days...boat designs of the early 20's are still being used today. One of the problems faced by many waterfowlers is that birds raft up on large open expanses of water. No shoreline to hunker down in, no stuff to hide in and a boat blind looks exactly like a boat blind on open water. So, some things like sink boxes were developed, this is basically a floating box that is below the water with just a small amount actually above the water line. Hunters put out decoys around the box and the ducks come right in....they are so effective that they have been outlawed for many decades, except for one or more provinces in Canada.Sculling is in essence the same thing, a small craft that is painted flat grey that sits mostly below the waterline, with the exception that you actually paddle a boat with one or two people to the ducks. There is a provision in the laws that states that when using motor powered force all forward motion must cease prior to hunting...no running and gunning.....since these boats are paddle powered they are exempt and this allows you to actually paddle within very close range undetected. We had several birds within feet of the boat, some still sleeping. This technique is not designed for everyday use as it is tiring laying down and operating an 8 foot paddle with one hand in a figure-8 motion to go several hundred yards. It is a specific tool for taking certain species of ducks that are either not prone to decoying or hang out in areas where other forms of hunting are not workable. Specific birds that we would be looking for are: Canvasbacks, season closed this year, Redheads, Golden Eye, Red Breasted or Common Mergansers, and several other diver species.www.duckboats.net/specs/images/scullduggery.jpgwww.duckboats.net/specs/scull.html There is a fine line between a hobby and insanity.Edited by: Rick618 at: 12/9/02 4:33:38 am
