I don't know about "best", but for shotguns there is a section of Classified forums here on Shotgunworld.

It depends.

If you know the price you need and it's a piece that has a niche appeal, a place like Shotgun World expose your sale to an educated audience for your piece. This is where I'd list a good double gun, etc. I used to collect C&R military arms and there are boards dedicated to them. I did better selling off my .22 training rifles there than on auction sites.

Firearms with a more universal appeal do well on the auction sites. Non-collectable S&W revolvers, 1911 pattern pistols, non-collectable Winchesters, etc. are what I'm thinking of here. My personal strategy is no reserve, but put the starting bid within about 10% of my bottom dollar. No bids means I'm too high and I relist. I often put a "buy it now" option that is my "dream price". Been surprised a couple times when someone took it.
