Shooting non-registered skeet in the wind

I passed on shooting today because the forecast was for moderate winds.

So here I sit, bored, as I observe little wind and tolerable shooting temps. Too late to pack-up and leave now. Dummkopf!

There are a Real Feel temps that will keep me off the skeet fields, and those are higher than they were just a few years ago, but wind will not scare me off the fields.

I still hate the drive and traffic to my skeet fields. That's the main reason I shoot so little skeet.

Think of it as a free handicap to keep things interesting. One of the club's I frequent can have wind gusts come in across the course throwing Highs about 10 feet above the hoop and pushes lows down about 5 feet under. Sometimes multiple wobbles along the flight path. Tests your adaptability to the unexpected.

So long as its not raining, any day on the range is a good day.

I think that wind shooting is fun, although it seems that birds often want to dip or rise just as I pull the trigger giving me a miss. On more than one occasion we had at our club such strong wind blowing toward the low house that the low bird would rise and stop in mid air before it got to the high house and then blow back toward the low house. Honestly, I am not kidding!

Bring it on-----as long as the temperature is at least 30 or so.
If for scores or you get frustrated then pass. If for fun and a good time with your buddies...

I don’t shoot registered skeet, just can’t get into the whole competition thing. However I do shoot quite a bit of skeet. I find shooting low gun on a breezy day to be good practice for some sporting clays shots and hunting.

Wind? Years ago in Oklahoma the wind was so strong the low house bird was going into the wind and coming to a dead stop in the air above the high house then starting to blow backwards. The high house bird was ducking and diving at rocket speed. Sometimes impacting into the ground in front of the low house. Nobody was counting score and it was actually fun. Never heard so much laughing and grinning faces as guys missed impossible shots. Big cheers on hits. Skeet can be fun if you don’t take it too seriously.

Wind sure makes for good practice. It definitely let's the shooter know whether or not proper attention is being applied.

Shooting for fun with our regular crew, we refer to windy conditions and unpredictable flight as $3 sporting clays. Well, we did up until last weekend when a round of skeet went to $4.

Seems like here in Ohio a windless day is as rare as finding reloading supplies on the shelf.
Skeet is an outdoor sport and, as such, wind is just part of the game.

I like it for the challenge. .410 especially. But that's just me.
As a duck and goose hunter, I hope for wind. Skeet is just practice when hunting seasons are closed. I like shooting skeet in the wind. Gives me a ready made alibi when I miss
Some of the most fun I've had on the skeet field has been on real windy days. We just laugh our fool heads off and applaud successful shots when the targets are just inches above the ground. I shot today in a nice breeze (10-15 mph) with a few harder gusts. It was just enough to keep ya guessing. I managed a straight and 49/50 with the big gun. With the .410 the best I could do was a couple of 22s.

Seriously? SO WHAT? Go shooting, support your local club - if folks like you do not, it may not be there next time. GEEZUS! Why are you skeeters so afraid of a little wind, ESPECIALLY when it is for grins and giggles? Learn to SHOOT. Learn HOW to shoot when it is windy. What are you going to do when you spend a lot of money to attend a major skket shoot and the wind puffs up a little? Say thr Hell with it, I'm going home? The guy who learns how to react to those targets and succeed will be a better hunter in the field and a better competitior on the pad. It is part of the game.

That quoted comment would be one for a math whiz.

Fwliw, you can also knock the center out of random targets in a stack for interest....wind helps there too.

Thank you oneounceload for saying that. Started to say just this and figured it was a waste of time. Not all skeet shooters are like this. I can promise you I am hunter first, skeet shooter second. No wind, rain going to keep me from shooting. I find the wind is a blast to shoot in and the most realistic situation for hunting wild birds.
I have a friend that I shoot with that complains if the wind blows, sun in eyes, target flys wrong or she missed because someone is cracking jokes. I just look at her and say” learn to shoot better”. Normally keeps her quiet for the rest of the round.

Good for you! The club I shoot 5-stand at is facing SOUTH...ARRRRGHHHH with tall trees in the distance so long shaodows make things disappear. Since ths is not the be-all, end-all, you leanr to adjust, shoot for your best and have fun. I shot 7 rounds of 5 stand today and yes, the sun SUCKED at times - oh well, it sucked for everyone. You just learn to deal with it, smile and go to the next target

Here in Oklahoma, if we stayed home when the wind blew, we’d never leave the house. We shot this past Tuesday and many times the high house target didn’t get to the low house because of the wind. Makes doubles at 6 a hoot.

Last summer I shot in a mini 100 for 410. Per NOAA the forecast was for temps in the mid 80's with winds gusting to 48 mph. In actual fact I suspect that some of the gusts were in the mid 50 mph range. High house or Low house it didn't matter a bit, that clay would clear the window in whatever direction the gust was blowing. Had a low 5 where the target was at least 75 feet from the ground and by pure luck I smacked that target dead center. The puller said "Holy ****, I didn't think that was possible with 410". After it was over one of the best shooters in the state spend 5 minutes writing Wobble Skeet all over the score sheet and laughing like a maniac. Got all of us laughing so hard I'm surprised one of us didn't end up on the ground. Yeah, we didn't score well but that doesn't matter we all still had a lot of fun and some shots to tell stories about.
