Shooting non-registered skeet in the wind

Our skeet field is subject to a lot of wind. We all kid one another when it is calm because we no longer have an excuse for a miss. We shoot when we can, and now, during the cold weather months, it can play a factor as to whether we shoot or don't shoot when coupled with temperatures that are too low for most of us to be close to comfortable.

I like the wind. Keeps me on my toes. We shoot Wobble Trap a lot. It's somewhat like the wind. You never know where the clay is coming from or where it is going. Love it.

We shoot wobble skeet in the wind and that’s a real hoot!

I like shooting trap in the wind, it's like wobble without changing the setting on the machine. I do not like skeet in the wind. It's not fun trying to avoid hitting the high house when the clay is super high, and it's also not fun trying to hit the clay before it hits the post when they are super low.

We shoot through most of the weather. Very low temps and rain keeps us off on occasion. Makes good conversation when that bird takes those up and down dips. The guys I shoot with are also all hunters so when an outing gets planned we go. When its raining we just might use a different shotgun that's easier to take apart, clean and dry out. To the OP I say go on those odd weather days. I think you will still enjoy shooting than sitting home.

There are a Real Feel temps that will keep me off the skeet fields, and those are higher than they were just a few years ago, but wind will not scare me off the fields.

I still hate the drive and traffic to my skeet fields. That's the main reason I shoot so little skeet.

Agree. I rarely go when it's windy. Cold or rain? No problem. But gusty wind? My accuracy sucks.

This thread is a little reminiscent of a comment Kim Rhode's dad would make, when it was cold, rainy or windy. "Looks like a good day to train"

Hmmmmm. I love shooting skeet in the wind.....freaks everyone out...I just watch the bird and crush it. Great fun and practice

In 1980, the National Gun Club held a skeet Tournament in San Antonio known as the Roadrunner 400. It was in March and the sustained winds were over 35 mph with gusts of over 45 mph. Among the 97 contestants Tony West NSSA 1984 Hall of Fame won the two day event breaking 396/400. Tony was the only shooter to shoot 100/100 in the .410 event. Robert Paxton won the 20 ga event and Tito Killian won the 28 ga event. Tony later said that his secret was to hold close to the house and break the bird immediately before the wind had a chance. I guess that's how you defeat the wind!

I'm sorry, but I just can't do that!!

When I was contender I had a lot of my wins in windy and otherwise bad conditions.

Perfect conditions today for this time of year. Real Feel Temp 49 degrees, wind 2-3 mph. It could be months before I get shooting conditions this good again. Club doesn't open for skeet until noon on Sundays, so no need for an early rise and departure. Heck, plenty of time for nice breakfast at the club. But I didn't shoot today either.

Twas sloth and an onerous commute that kept me away. The wind was just an convenient excuse. I miss shooting today. I don't miss the commute.

Quite frankly I shoot like crap when there is no wind at our range, which is rare. It is a range you would never see a registered shoot nor the real "pros" as they hate to miss what us club members can break easy. Windy, cold, and snotty weather is like the duck hunting I did for 40 years. Heck I even amaze my buddy's when I call in Geese off the water, with my Gleynn Scobey that's always in my shooting jacket. We all just have fun and most of the club members are hunters so they look at it like practice.

I love shooting in the wind. Keeps things interesting.

When it's windy, you can tell which folks are hunters. I used to tell the kids..."Shoot them like ducks"

Some folks like to use skeet fields for 8-stand. I don't. Skeet fields and times are not convenient for me. When I get the opportunity to shoot skeet, I want decent skeet targets.

I have very convenient and affordable 5-stand and short-course sporting when I want to play like that. No need for me to do that on a skeet field.

If I waited for a day with no wind here in Northern Nevada I'd never shoot. It's not uncommon for 10, 20 and higher winds here

Focus young Skywalker, many shooters expect the target to be in the same place every time, yeh-right! Mother nature has her own ideas about fun.
There is only one thing that keeps me off of the skeet or trap field and that is having a tornado relocating our club house in another town. I've lived in the north country all of my life where a weather forecast is another joke.
Only a few years ago I shot winter league skeet in a 15-mph whiteout with lights at night and recorded two rounds of 50 straight, even the puller was impressed. It seems the worst the weather the better I shoot. Focus.
