Shooting with tubes removed

Recently I witnessed several shooters remove choke tubes for a sporting clays station with very, very close target presentation. Will this harm the threads? Will it increase shot spread?

I've seen this done as well and think it is a dumba** thing to do. If you can't hit it with a cylinder tube your only risking serious damage to you , your gun and possibly another shooter.
