Shooting with tubes removed

Recently I witnessed several shooters remove choke tubes for a sporting clays station with very, very close target presentation. Will this harm the threads? Will it increase shot spread?

When I bought my gun recently the guy said to me "Never fire this without the chokes in or you will damage the threads." I would imagine that the threads would be just about destroyed after only one or two shots.
