Hello,

What is the shortest sporting shotgun made? I am looking for a shotgun I can attach a sling to and not have it extend over my shoulder. I plan on doing some winter fly fishing and I want to take my dog with me and also look for grouse along the stream. Some of the cover I will encounter is a bit thick and I want something that will not become entangled a lot.

Thanks
Maddawgg

of course the minimal barrel length has to be 18 inches and I think some states have a total overall length requirement. I think you will need to get a 20 inch barrel with a choke since most of the tactical barrels for defense are cylinder bore.

I saw some double barrel side by sides in the gunshop for cowbow action shooting that were like the short stage coach guns from the old west. them suckers looked really cool..but handy too.

The Federal minimums for shotguns is 18" for the barrel and 26" overall. The reason that most manufacturers make the short barrels 18.5" is so that someone won't go to prison because of some minor manufacturing tolerance that resulted in a barrel that was only 17.99" long....... and therefore illegal.

i thought it was 18.5 inches cuz i always see home defense barrel sold that are always 18.5 inches :? anyways it would be cool to have a barrel that short n then thread the barrel to accept screw in choke tubes
Mossberg makes one with an 18.5 inch barrel with a spreader choke. It's on the bottom of this page:

I don't know if it has supports for a sling, though.

maddawgg, the Remington 11-87 20ga has a 23" barrel & overall length of 43 1/2", weighs in at 6 1/4lbs. The older Remington Special Fields (1100 & 870) come with a 21" barrel & o/a length 41". Light and handy, sounds like they might fit the bill!! Good hunting.
