The Model 1893 was designed with 12-gauge 2 5/8 inch smokeless powder shells in mind. At the time the Model 1893 was being built, the heaviest factory loads offered in the 12-gauge 2 5/8" case was 3 1/4 drams of bulk smokeless powder such as DuPont, E.C., Schultze, etc. pushing 1 1/4 ounces of shot.

UMC was offering smokeless powder loaded shotgun shells by 1891. Winchester was providing smokeless powder shotgun shells to selected shooters in 1893 and to the general public in 1894.
