I have been using a Mossberg 500 since I started hunting birds. I have never purchased a special choke for steel shot. Is the only reason for after market chokes for performance, or will it hurt the factory chokes to shoot steel through them.
You'll need to refer to the manual for the choke tube ratings shipped with your gun. The early guns were shipped with tubes listed for lead shot. Later guns were shipped with some chokes listed for steel.
The guns being shipped under the Remington (Spartan) name indicate steel listings for the C and IC chokes.
