I had asked something simular about an older gun but got mixed answers. Later that week I was able to get a hold of my gunsmith and was told that I shouldn't shoot steel shot thru my old barrel or thru the C-lect choke. He told me that sure it wouldn't do anything in the beginning but after repeated shots with the steel the barrel would deform or something like that. Currently he has ordered me a new barrel with screw in/out chokes for less then $100. If you have a 500 there are lots of inexpensive barrel options out there. Check them out.
