I recently purchased a Browning Auto-5 Light 12 ***** made in Japan in 1978 with a fixed Modified choke. I usually shoot a BPS, but want to try the Auto-5 for duck and possibly some goose hunting. I have read a number of articles, and posts on this forum, that you can't shoot steel with a Belgium fixed choke barrel, but that you can shoot steel shot with the Japanese Invector choke barrel. I've never seen anything mentioned about the Japanese fixed Modified choke barrel. Can I safely shoot steel shot (say as large as BBs) through this barrel?

I would appreciate your comments.

according to browning DO NOT SHOOT STEEL in a barrel unless it has been made for interchangeable choke tubes.

New guns are designed with steel shot in mind. I've only seen one barrel say "steel shot proofed". Usually it's printed in the manual somewhere. This is not new at all. It was a more common term after steel shot had been out for a time.
