I’ve heard talk of how squirrel are easy to hunt. I don’t agree. You can find dumb ones but most are pretty wily except when they’re heavily into the nut harvest.
I’ve been hunting them for 25 years. I never understood the difference between what I do on a hunt and what would be common sense until today. I took my buddy to my best spot for an evening hunt. They’re tougher to kill if the evening but I usually can get 3-5 in a couple of hours vs 5-10 on a morning hunt this time of year.
It didn’t go well. Trees were full of them but they kept locking down. I explained repeatedly what the problem was. Vape pen. You can smell that thing 50 yards off with human senses. Then simply put making to much noise and movement. The amount of noise a hunter ought to make is damn near zero once you get in position. I normally sit in place and don’t move my hands for 15-20 minutes before they start moving. Then I creep into a better spot if needed following sounds and fallen nut fragments to get my shot.
This guy was whispering, talking, dog whistling, then outright yelling across the woods. I tried hard to ease far away from him. Constantly moving around and making exaggerated hand gestures. I was worried charley was up in them trees the way he was going on.
we got toward sundown which is usually the Golden hour and he insisted on leaving. We hadn’t been there but an hour or so. The least he could have done is tough it out and let me ease off on my own to kill a few.
I’m thinking this is a lost cause. I’ve not had much luck teaching people.
