I spent four hours yesterday at The Glorious Twelfth and it was great. The proprieter, Andy Tubb, is a former British Royal Marine sniper as well as a former London tactical response officer. He is a current member of Britain's Institute of Clay Shooting Instructors and the British Association for Shooting and Conservation.
His facility is behind his home and is beautiful. There is a clubhouse of sorts that houses his fitting tools as well as a small shop and small bar. We took a couple of breaks and his wife always had fresh coffee ready for us upon our return. The shooting field is a short walk into the woods. He has six traps set up around the perimeter which are in roughly 60-degree increments. At the 12 o'clock position sits a tower and at the 6 o'clock position is a platform under which sits the trap. All of the traps can be adjusted for pan and tilt by remote control. This means that, by moving around the field while adjusting the traps, several thousand flight permutations can be achieved.
He quickly corrected my bad habits relative to stance and mounting. I was a data analyst in a former life and I was constantly attemping to analize lead and that was causing me to briefly pause the gun which made me miss an awful lot of targets. That problem was corrected after a couple of hours. I have a round of clays scheduled tomorrow, so we'll see if I was able to retain my lessons.
The $45/hour rate is very reasonable especially considering that the whole facility is dedicated to the student for the time booked.
If ever you are in Virginia and wish do get some top-rate instruction at a beautiful facility, I suggest you give Andy Tubb a call:
