Traditions O/U?

1358 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Equismith
I am trying to find information about the Traditions brand, specifically the O/U. As I am currently looking at the 3 1/2" O/U for goose hunting.

The local dealers do not carry the Traditions brand and I am not familar with it. Any suggestions or information is greatly appreciated.

Note: I am a left hand shooter and have problems with most of the O/Us as the barrel release lever is angled through my vision when I bring the gun up to my shoulder. This is really bothersome and throws off my shot. Thus, I am trying to find a O/U where the barrel release lever is somewhat aligned with the sites.

First off, if you find an o/u where the barrel release is somewhat lined up with the sights (I assume you mean fairly straight) then it is pretty well used. The lever is angled on purpose and through usage begins to move to the center.
Secondly, I have a good friend who hunts waterfowl with the Traditions waterfowl o/u and he absolutely loves the gun. Has had no problems with it. For the price they are well made.

That statement is not necessarily correct. It all depends on the type locking system in the gun. For guns which use the tapered wedge type locking system such as the Browning Citori, your statement is true. For guns which use a sliding crossbolt (Greener type) locking system such as the Weatherby or SKB, the statement is NOT correct. These guns come from the factory with the opening lever centered in the middle of the grip. They stay in the middle regardless of amount of usage.

As to the original poster's question about a 12 gauge 3 1/2" Magnum O/U, all I can say is that you should shoot one before deciding to buy one. My guess is that after a few rounds of 3 1/2" Magnum ammo through an O/U, you will decide that 3" Magnum is plenty big enough.

First off, I have found some o/u's with the release lever aligned somewhat with the sights. However, the price tag was in the $3,000 range, which is too expensive for this guys hunting budget. I'd rather put the money into my rig for gas and keep shooting what I have.

Secondly, I had not planned on regularly shooting 3 1/2" shells through the gun, just have found a Traditions O/U 3 1/2" for a really reasonable price. My preference is the 3" shells.

Thank you for your comments.
Traditions does not manufacture their own guns, like a lot of companys. I bought a 3 1/2 O/U from Tristar Sporting Arms which is actually made by Zabala Hermanos of Spain. It is my understanding that they make a lot of O/Us for "rebranders" (Traditions, Tristar, Charles Daly)

I bought the gun in June and it is still at Tristar for repairs...the second time. For the complete history do a search on Tristar and review the thread I started.

For what it is worth, I would never buy a rebranded gun. Stick with reputable manufacturers that make what they sell.

If you are set on getting a 3 1/2 O/U then look at one of the auction site for a Citori Hunter. They were made for a few years. I had one (95%) in my hand at Scheels last year for $1,000. I should have bought it, even though the Tristar was $400 less.

Are you referring to the Browning Citori Hunter that was made by Miroku of Japan and "rebranded" with the Browning name?
I have a Traditions 20ga O/U made by Fausti of Italy. Great gun for the price. Both I and my daughter shoot it.

Carlson's Choke Tubes has replacement tubes for less than Traditions.

I have heard that some have had problems with broken firing pins. Mine has not after about 600 rounds. It's still a little stiff but will loosen as we shoot it more.
