You will not likely blind your target with your first encounter so that should not be your goal. You ever see those angled flashlights that the military uses....clips to you and not the gun...I agree that the flashlight gives you away but you do have to know your target and unless you own NightVision, flashlights are the only choice. Police, military use the flashlights to blind their targets but they are already engaged at this point so giving away position is mute. HD use of a flashlight should go like this.

Bump bump bump in the night
What was that?
Grab my gun and flashlight and start out. Use cover of doorway or hallway and test your surroundings with the light.

Oh no...a BG. Head back to bedroom or area that is safe (should figure this out ahead of time)

get back behind cover and call police and announce that you did it after you have called.

In most cases the perp will leave after being caught in the act.
If they stay you are now in a defensive place and have a firearm.

You will not likely shot an officer because if they were properly trained and aren't some hillbillies they will anounce their presence

now you have protected yourself and property.

(you will have to make common sense changes to this plan to make it work for your setup)

Don't get me wrong I would like to give that person I piece of my mind and some pieces of lead but I have insurnace and my company has a list of everything I own....except personal items....so they can replace them within 72 hours. Thats why I would go this way and if you live on your own ( not living at home with mommy and daddy ) then your insurance should do close to the same ( don't know about your turn around time)

Whats more important? the lives of the people you care about or the PS2 in the living room?

I can take it guys..and I was just kidding around...trust me I don't treat these forums like I would the ranges that I have worked at...I do have a sense of humor...even though a web based forum probably is not the right place for it.
