The shell was a full brass 3 inch, with a red stripe around the primer end about a half inch wide and was heavy. I have called a few gun stores but they don't have a clue; any ideas?

sounds like an industrial load to me, you might want to post this question on the reloaders forum

What exactly is an industrial load? It looked like an 870 with a pistol grip, scope and laser. This guy also bragged that it was a lot more powerful than the cops had.

Industrial loads are often used to break deposits out of kilns, furnaces, cokers, boilers, etc. Instead of cooling down the unit and going in, there is a small door that can be opened and a gun fired in to dislodge whatever build up has formed. Like sandblasting, but with a big gun. Winchester still makes 8ga shell for industrial purposes.
