............ As many of you currently active posters know I have been looking to purchase a light gauge early season shotgun to be used to take up Ruffed Grouse hunting here in the upper N.Y.-New England area. ... I have narrowed my final choice to between either a Remington 870 Wingmaster or a Stoeger uplander double barrel. ... My sole purpose here at this time is to inquire about a certain Win. 28 gauge loading to be used for this purpose.
............ Most every ammunition company that loads 28 gauge shotgun shells has as it's standard loading the 3/4 oz. loading. ... One company (Winchester) loads a full 1 oz. loading. ... The company advertises the shotshell velocity as 1205 fps. ... Somewhere I once read (I don't remember where) that some one did some chronograph tests on this shell and found the velocity was actually more like 1046 fps. ... I want to test pattern this shotshell in my new shotgun when I finally get it see if it performs well.
............ What is important here is, is the velocity enough to give adequite penetration on a bird as large as a Ruffed Grouse at 20-35 yards? ... No use in me patterning this shotshell in my new shotgun if the penetration is not up to the required standard. ... What do you posters think, those of you that have some field experience in this matter. ... The number shot size will be either 7.5 or number 8's. ... I already realize that the gun may not like the 1 oz. loading anyway. ... Just want to know about the velocity vs. penetration
With Kindest Regards ... Norm
