I’m about to acquire 30 pounds of an old Winchester powder, and I’m looking for load data. This is Winchester 473AA. I generally shoot number eight shot at about 1150 FPS. 12ga, 1 ounce loads.
Thanks

473AA was discontinued in the 80s. It was replaced by WSF, but that does not make it equal in charge weight or power. That means in 12 gauge it was used for a heavy handicap target load, or even 1 1/4 ounce hunting loads.

I'll take a wild guess and assume you want to load 12 gauge Winchester AA Compression Formed hulls - the old one piece target hull. Here's one recipe for 1 1/8 ounce lead shot that I found in the Reloading for Shotgunners Handbook from 1997, by Fackler and McPherson, with the lightest 473AA load in that hull and with a WAA12 wad and Win 209 primer to be:

23.5 grains making 1200 FPS
25.0 grains making 1255 FPS - and a note saying it duplicated the Win Expert 3 1/4 dram load from back then

Which is higher speed than you normally like, I'd guess.

And nothing with 473AA and 1 ounce of shot.

This manual of course does not list a Win AA HS hull (which did not come out until in the 2000s.)

The manual does have some Remington RXP/STS loads - these load with the same velocities and pressures with a 1 1/8 ounce load, WAA12 wad, Win 209 primer, in an STS hull at:

23.5 grains making 1200 FPS
24.8 grains making 1245 FPS

And nothing with 473AA and 1 ounce of shot.

The manual does show quite a few 1 1/4 ounce loads in the "field" section of the data.

473AA powder is not a powder that will come very close to a 1150 FPS 1 ounce load in 12 gauge hulls.

good luck, garrisonjoe

It is the powder that Olin used in their AA 20 ga 7/8 in Target loads as they stated in advertising literature and it also has some application in 12 ga loads. Great powder. Lucky find

Its more of a 20 gauge powder but.

Winchester CF hull
1 1/8 ounce
CB-1118-12(WAA12)
Win 209
23.5 gr for 1200fps
8500 lup

only Remington data I have is for the "Blue Magic "hull.
only real difference is 24 instead of 23.5 for 1200 fps.
These examples both work and develop adequate pressure. But 1-1/8 Oz. is not 1 Oz., which will have lower pressure if held to the same 1,200 FPS velocity. Plus the OP wants 1,150 FPS velocity.

If I had this powder and did not load 20 gauge. Wanted to use it some way myself and only loaded 12 gauge. It would be somewhat simple. In the data I gave above sub a one ounce winchester style wad CB1100(WAA12SL) for the CB1118(WAA12).Reduce shot drop to one ounce. See how it actually performs. One way to slightly raise the pressure would also be to use a CB8100(TGT12). W473AA was a powder from before one ounce became popular in 12 gauge. Altho the pressures appear to be low. I have seen much lower pressured loads that were quite clean and performed quite surprisingly well.
But I still think it's better suited for 20 gauge. This was before I started loading 28 gauge and I am somewhat surprised there's not any 28 gauge data.

With the absence of Unique, and Universal Clays, and Green Dot, and Herco, and International Clays I would think that there would be a lot of interest from 20 ga reloaders in a trade. I know that were you close by, and I’m sure that you aren’t, I would discuss a trade pound for pound with Extra Lite. But that isn’t going to happen.

I loaded 473 back in the 70's and IMO it wasn't that great. It took 18grs to make 1200fps (20ga) and only 16 grs of Unique. I just ran some numbers on my reloading calculator. To equal a 15.5 gr load of Perfect pattern @ 1150fps (@$35/lb) you'll have to buy the 473@$23/lb because you'll be using approx 23-24grs, if it works ok.

I don't think Win 473AA is a good choice for 12 ga. 1 oz loads. But it's fine for 1-1/8 oz. I actually just dug out an old canister and loaded a case of shells today. Win AA case, Cheddite primer with 23.5 grns of 473AA, Claybuster WAA12 clone wad and 1-1/8 oz - 1200 fps 8500 LUP. Load data is from Winchester manual with Cheddite primer substituted for Win 209

473AA was Winchester’s basic 20 gauge powder way back in the 70’s. They used it in their 20 gaugeAA target loads. If you have one of their reloading books from back then, they list the components and data to duplicate their top of the line AA target shells. They used 473AA.
452AA was their 12 gauge powder. Not much data for 1 ounce loads from back then because shot was cheap and few people were interested in them.

If it was an amazing deal you may be able to pass it on to a 20ga loader, assuming the powder is still good.. its at least 40 years old so we could assume around 50 years now its been sitting somewhere unless someone bought it during closeout.

Id personally see if a 20ga guy wants to buy it now and move on. I wouldn't buy it for stock or to try and find a buyer later.. it will just become 60, 70 year old powder. Not many people will want to purchase 30lbs of 50yo powder with no data for current components so i personally wouldn't touch it unless you have a 3rd party buyer now. Unless its basically free of course.

It was the standard 20ga powder back in the day, making a 2.5 dram 7/8 or standard 2.75 dram 1oz. It would be comparable to WSF today. DO NOT USE WSF DATA

The only way that you can sell it is face to face. Shipping, at least in the U.S. is not really possible without a license. Even then it’s difficult. Suggest that you put the word out in your area among your circle of trusted friends and look for a buyer or someone interested in a trade. You might have to sell/trade in smaller quantities
