Hi! I'm new to shotguns and firearms, and am considering buying a Mossberg 'Security' gun or a Winchester Defender. They both seem to be very similar.

I was wondering, what gun is the most versatile? I like in Los Angeles, CA. I don't plan on using it as an actively defensive weapon persay. I just want a cheap gun that I can take to the Range or go use to hunt with sometime.

I can get the Defender for 249.99 and the Mossberg for 219.99 before taxes. Both seem to be shorties and both can hold up to 8 rounds.

What's a higher quality weapon? Thanks.

Are you looking at a Mossberg 500 or a Maverick? Either way I'd probably go with the Winchester 1300, just personal preference. Your'e gonna need a 13" plug with either one to get down to legal hunting shotgun limit of 2+1. Unless that's just a Texas thing.

It's the Mossberg 500. 219.99. On sale this week at Big 5 Sports in California.
I currently own the Winchester 1300 Defender. I've had it about 4 years. It's one great Gun. I've Deer Hunted with it and took a nice 9 point using 00Buck shot.
I love the fact that it swings easy and holds 8 shots 2 3/4" shells. The price is right. Change out the barrels and use it upland hunting or Deer, keep it around the house for security.

You can't go wrong with the Defender.

Hope my opinion helps.

Yeah, you've sold me. I'm going with the defender. Also, what is a good barrel to change to? I've seen good prices for "Slug round" barrels on Ebay. If those barrels can handle slugs, they can handle 00 buckshots, right?
If you want a Defender you will only have two barrel options. The Camp Defender with a 22" barrel with adjustable open sights with the Winchoke system or the 18" barrel with the fixed cylinder choke. No other 1300 barrels will work with the Defenders because of the extended magazine.
