Hi everyone I am new to gas operated shotguns. Just purchased sX4 in 20 gage. I am confused about the owners manual gas system maintenance. The manual states to lubricate the gas system. In the general forum some of you suggested to keep it dry other to use CLP breakthrough as it does’t bake into the piston as other oils do. Could anyone of you owning Sx4 share your experience with the gas system ? Do you lubricate the piston the ring and the mag tube on sx4 or run it dry? Thank you for all your feedback in an advance.

I have 2 and sold another. Use it dry. Clean the piston and mag tube with hoppes let it dry and use dry lube on the rails. I have found that dry works best in all weather conditions especially cold weather. I asked an exhibition shooter who uses SX4s and shoots thousands of rounds through them and this is his recommendation.

Yes absolutely it was Steve Gould.

I have kept a light coating of Rem-Oil on the gas system of my two SX2s and my SX3 for years. They all run like tops, including the SX2 Sporting which has fired many thousands of rounds and never jams. Plus, I think the fouling is easier to remove than if they were run dry.

Outside of mag tube and inside of piston wipe with a cloth that has a small amount of your favorite lubricant, so there is barely any on those two parts. Outside of piston and inside of cylinder keep completely dry after cleaned. I have gas guns that run for 2500 rnds with no issues doing that, cycling or wear, but it's best to clean every 600-800 IMO. I use Hoppes Benchrest with weatherguard.

Hi everyone I received an answer from Winchester costumer service the did confirm to use lubrication on the gas system. As suggested by some I will use minimal coat of break-free CLP on the inside of the piston and on the mag tube where the gas piston movement happens. Don’t see the reason to put it on the outside of the piston.

“Thanks for reaching out. Yes, that is correct, you will want to apply a thin film of oil to all parts of the gas system after a good deep clean”.
