Iam new here and basically new to shot guns again .......havent shot in over 35 years until recently ......
Iam looking to buy a Winchester SX4 , because a gunsmith recommended it to me as being reliable and a good gun all around.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this ??
I should have it next week and Iam like a kid at Christmas .........lol

What do you plan to use it for?
I don't have experience with the 4...I own a camo SX3 that I use for waterfowl and turkey hunting.
I love it....light, fits me perfectly, soft shooting...super easy to breakdown and put back together...super well designed.
I've had occasional issues with the slide not returning all the way when I get alot of dirt in it..as is to be expected. I am still trying to figure out the right way to lube for those conditions.
I would not hesitate to buy another or to buy a 4...
Go for it.

It comes with three common chokes, Full, Modified, Improved Cylinder, Invector Plus Flush and a tool. You should be good to go. Of course you can dive into the choke rat hole and start buying other restrictions or brands but for general purposes..shoot it as is until you decide you need to change it.
Except for a turkey choke I picked up for my SX3 I'm still shooting the factory chokes in it...dropped lots of birds with it and I can score as well in trap with it as my over and under.... (not saying much about my trap shooting, pull, bang awe sh*t).

Do yourself a HUGE favor and read Randy Wakeman's reviews. Google them.

Make very sure to also look at his reviews for other models. Like the Rem V3.

I bought an Sx3 20 ga and a V3 in 12 Ga last year. I really like both of them. The chokes in the Sx3 (and I think maybe the Sx4) are reputed to be in need of upgraded chokes.

Moreover, because your gunsmith recommended it isn't good enough. Try it to see how it fits first. If it doesn't fit you then pass on it and look at something else.

Thanks for all the input ......... Ive held the SX4 but havent shot one because the place I can rent guns doesnt have any ......
Just holding it alone seems ok to me ......I really like the florescent bead , seems eassier to get on target.
I will look at a Remington V3 and see ...........
However I like my gunsmith friend , he,s an old guy and I trust what he says.
Randys reviews are plenty ......... he seems to find something wrong with all of them , somewhat.
My gunsmith guy told me the SX system is a simple system and proven to work nicely , I,ll ask him about the Rem. V3 .........

The V3 system is even simpler: much simpler. And as you become accomplished with a shotgun you will find that that fluorescent front bead will become meaningless.

Love my SX3. Just don't trust Remington for reliability... Why would your gunsmith steer you wrong?
I dont think he would at all .........he told me he,d sell me any gun I wanted , he didnt care , but he also told me what guns he thought was best in his opinion.
So with that said , Ive bought alot of stuff (knives) from him in the past , so I know him pretty good and I also trust what he says.
He is also going to fit me for the gun he says (shims) if need be ........also show me how to maintain it.......... I feel I cant go wrong with this ol guy.
I just post stuff here to get others opinions and to see if anyone else has one of these guns.
So far Ive gotten pretty good feed back , which makes me happy (reassures me)
Thanks to all who have posted...........but please dont stop.

I agree. While I don't own a V3, I do own a Versa Max as well as an SX-3. My SX-3 came with two gas pistons: one for light loads and one for heavy loads. My Versa Max shoots anything I feed it from my light 3/4 oz skeet loads all the way up to the 3 1/2" Roman candles without so much as a hiccup. My SX-3 is prettier, but thats about all it has over the VM. I'll buy a V3 when they make one that looks as good as the SX-3. That's the only thing holding me back.

to OP:

my cousin just bought an sx4 3.5 last weekend. soft shooting gun, nice fit and finish. we took it out last night and put 100~ rounds through it with no failures whatsoever shooting 1 1/8 oz 3dram federals @ 1200 fps.

did the early sx3 models ship with 2 pistons? my uncle got an sx3 in november and it didnt come with 2 pistons. neither did my maxus which afaik uses the exact same gas system, at least it has identical pistons, recoil spring/etc. as does my cousins sx4 which also only came with 1 piston also.

In an attempt to make the gun cycle with light to heavy loads, the SX-3 was shipped for a period of time with two pistons until a compromise was attained with a single piston which is the case presently. Even so, my SX-3 will not cycle my 3/4 oz skeet loads, but my Versa Max will.

out of curiosity do you have the 3" or 3.5" version?

not surprised the sx3 wouldnt cycle 3/4 oz loads though, those are pretty light. my maxus and my uncles sx3 were being finicky with winchester 1 1/8 yesterday, but weve had 0 issues with federal 1 1/8oz and 1 oz field and range loads. both guns 3.5" versions.

My SX-3 is a 3" Flannigun. I shoot a lot of skeet, and I load 3/4 oz #9s in most of my skeet loads. My 1100 Tournamet Skeet also balks at those mouse fart loads. BUT, my SX-1 Skeet and my Versa Max and my friend's Beretta 400 will cycle them all day long. I haven't tried them in a V3. The SX-3 will cycle my 7/8 oz loads, for what it's worth.

Sounds like that gunsmith is a keeper.

You might want to do a comparison with the SX-3 before you buy a SX-4

What do you mean ?? The SX4 and SX3 have the same internal parts .........
The only differences are the trigger whole is bigger and bolt and button on the side is bigger , along with slimmer pistol grip , from what Ive read on them.
Iam new here so any help is appreciated.

Read or watch Randy Wakeman's review of the SX-4

I have seen it .........Ive seen lots of different opinions , good and bad.

He obviously doesnt like them .........lol Its getting to where a person doesnt know what to think ............ Ive heard more positive things though than bad ...... Granted the SX4 hasnt been out long enough.

Nobody is trying to TELL you what to do. We are just providing you with information so that you can make the decision that is right for you. You can take the information or ignore it. Wakeman is an authority on these guns who most of us recognize and trust. Whether you agree or not, in the end the decision is up to you.
