Woodcock G2?

Hi all,

Potential new Huglu owner here. Went to Sportsman's Warehouse last weekend intending to buy a Beretta A300 12g as my first shotgun for sporting clays and waterfowl.

I was suggested to take a look at the Woodcock, which is a gun I'm not at all familiar with. Beyond the usual information about CZ Shotguns (seems like most people on the forums except this subsection don't like them) what should I know about the gun? I'm more than open to getting a CZ shotgun but would like to know more and can't find any good info on this shotgun. Is $650 a good deal?

Thanks

If it's new and the warranty will be in effect, then I think it's a good deal. Should come with a full set of choke tubes as well. These guns are pretty tough to come by anymore. They no longer make (or at least import) them, but they are one of my favorite of the CZ o/u styles from an aesthetic perspective.

Somebody on here will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they are the same as the original Wingshooter with different wood and the case-hardened receiver.

Let us know if you pull the trigger!

Will do!

I've read on older posts that its MSRP used to be around ~1k, which if true kind of makes this seem like a no brainer to me. Would love to hear from someone about its reliability. I know that some one on here has 32k+ rounds through a different CZ model which is promising though

The earlier iteration of the CZ O/U line included the Canvasback, the RedHead, the Wingshooter, and the Woodcock. All were essentially the same shotgun, that is, they all used the Huglu 103 action. Some had ejectors, the Canvasback was available with both ejectors or extractors. It's a solid action - as you mentioned it's cdb1097 that has a Canvasback with 32k+ rounds through it. There's not a dime's worth of difference between the Woodcock and the Canvasback - it's all in the trim and metal finish, and possible the ejector/extractor.

I have a 12 gauge Canvasback and I like it. I don't have anywhere as many rounds through it but it just keeps on going strong.

Ah, good to know they all use the same action. It sounds like they're perfectly reliable then, now it's just time to make up my mind...

I just picked up the Woodcock G2 as my first O/U after 25 years of shooting other people's shotguns. When I saw it in stock at Sportsman's website I literally ran down to the store and bought the last one. I only have 125 rds through it and I love it. I had been shopping around for about 3 months for a budget O/U and shouldered different models between Stoeger, Weatherby, Franchi and Tri-star. The G2 fit me nicely and also has ejectors which was an important feature for me. For the price, I think $650 is a deal. It also comes with a nice plastic case and is quite compact for storage and transportation. Its not super heavy but also not lightweight either, seems like a middleweight and recoil felt about the same as my brother's Beretta Silver Pigeon. We shoot primarily 8 shot 1 1/8 oz target loads. That being said, I'm looking at fitting a limbsaver to soften it a little.

The only hiccup I've experienced is the top shell occasionally failing to completely eject. This happened about 10 times which was a slight annoyance but not a big deal. As I get more rounds on the gun I'll report back if this disappears.

Between my wife and I we have 4 CZ-USA O/Us. My "everyday" hunting gun is a Canvasback with extractors (got it last Spring). I don't have the numbers of shells through it cdb1097 does his. I can certainly say that for half a season of Sporting Clays once a week and an entire waterfowl season (with heavy 3" shells) and an upland season it did very well. I like the extractors for waterfowl, I don't have to chase floating empties. I also have a CZ Redhead Premier Target model which gets a weekly 100-200 round workout. I do switch to the Canvasback SEP-DEC for clays just to stay tuned up for hunting. Both guns have run flawlessly.

My wife has a standard Redhead Premier reduced LOP as a field gun. She likes it and has shot several cases of shells through it but since she got her CZ-SCTP Lady Sterling it hasn't seen much use. She loves that gun! It also has seen 100-200 rounds a week since it was purchased last July.

I wouldn't say we are "wearing out" these guns but the target guns have received weekly use for six months to a year and the field guns have had their fair share of trigger pulls. Zero problems so far. These are all 12 gauges.

As mentioned in the other posts, from what I have read the Woodcock has a similar design to our guns and the G2 has the updated CNC process and improved spring design. I think you will enjoy the gun.
