Worthwhile discontinued shotguns

I've developed an interest in discontinued shotguns that are unique, high-quality, or otherwise special. Not necessarily expensive guns, but those that are worth seeking out. For example, I've recently picked up a Super X-1, a browning B-2000, a Valmet 412, and a Remington 1100 special field 20 ga. These aren't intended to be primary hunting or target guns, but just examples of good quality or interesting design. What others do you suggest?

You have four of my favorites, and to range out a little more you'll need a Model 37 Ithaca (still in production, though), a Model 12 Winchester, and a Browning Auto Five.

Anything more is just gravy,,,but I do like gravy.:)

i can deff say it's worth it to shoot a Higgins model 20 in your lifetime. or any of the old high standard model 200 pumps. they have "free falling actions" that are smooth as silk and a very short pump.

also any of the old long recoil operated semi-auto's. i'm no rich man so the Browning's and Remington's were way out of my price range. but i did pick up a nice Savage 755a for around 100$. it shoot's like a dream and it's basically the same gun with a more streamlined receiver instead of the "hump back" receiver.

Is it a shotgun or rifle?
The Savage 24B 30-30/20ga is probably one of the best multi-purpose firearm ever made, for turkey/deer hunting within those states that have fall hunting for both seasons open at the same time! I've had numerous opportunities too fill both tags from my treestand. It seems anything that has had a great idea always never lasts!!

These posts are great. I especially like the suggestions for an Ithaca 37, savage 24, beretta 302/303 (or B80), franchi 48, SKB (maybe a 100?), and some others. I handled an SKB xl300 in 20 ga last week that I should've picked up. Just for fun, I'll add a few more I have and really enjoy: Browning A5 Stalker, Charles Daly 500 sxs and Superior o/u both made by Miroku. Keep the suggestions coming...it certainly is an addictive quest!

There is no cure for your disease. Nor is there a vaccine for it. I use the money that I would spend on medical research finding old guns. Those old SKB semis are a terrible affliction that I can't find a cure for. Stevens and Fox B doubles are even worse. Just can't pass one up. There are others that I can't think of right now.

If there is ever a cure, I will pass on it and buy another safe.

Interesting design? Beretta UGB 25 Xcel - break open semi gas gun, not quite discontinued but discounted to half here in the States
Any of the AH Fox, Parkers, SKBs (though they are being reborn in Turkey), Browning BSS, older Beretta Silverhawks with DT, even the Hastings barrel extension for urban goose control is a cool design that actually works.

I have acquired four Browning B-80 shotguns: three of the 20 gauge guns and one 12 gauge, all steel receiver. They were all in like new or new condition. I am going to receive another 12 gauge soon. I love these guns, especially the 20 gauges, which is a perfect high volume dove gun. I think theses guns are a sleeper. I wouldn't buy the alloy receiver version or it's sibling, the Beretta 303. I didn't like the recoil of the alloy receiver. YMMV.

I had bought a like new SX-1 field gun and when I actually saw all of the internal parts of this particular gun, I ended up selling it and went back to acquiring another B-80. The B-80 has less parts to clean, which I am particular about cleaning my guns after each and every use. But the SX-1 felt solid and the machining of the parts was outstanding.

Some of these "oldie but goodie" guns from the 70's and 80's are the best.

I'm partial to the Belgian Brownings. My wish list includes: Superposed twin single trigger, or superlight in 20 gauge. A5 mag 20 or sweet 16. Double auto in brown or green. Double auto twenty weight.

Wow! What a great thread concept! And one that I can see is going to cost me some money :s

One I'd suggest has been mentioned several times … The Val Browning designed Browning Double Auto with it's innovative speed load mechanism and ultra-reliable short-recoil action.

Another I'd recommend was designed by Val's father … The John Browning designed Remington Model 17. You probably never saw one, but it begat many of the great pumps ever made, including the Ithaca Model 37, the Mossberg Model 500 and the Remington Model 870.

Damn, and I don't have a Model 17 in my collection anymore. I'll have to go get one :D

Thanks!
Dave

If you find one, get a Rottweil 650. Produced in very limited numbers in 1986 for Dynamit Nobel by some Italian company. I love that gun! My dad has one but refuses to sell it to me, had it since it was new in 86, fired thousands of rounds and not a single problem has occured so far.

Damn good guns, best part. They never were expencive!

As mentioned before Ithaca/SKB shotguns are good finds. One thing is that if you find a discontinued shotgun you really like you can get on the internet and find parts for it in a lot of cases. Before the internet if you needed parts it could be really tough to find them. I have brought back to life several discontinued guns with parts from the internet and advice from the guys on these forums. Good thread! Regards RB {hs#
