Hi,

I was looking through some old posts trying to find some information on the BL-4, as I was looking at buying a used one and I came found some infomation on this site. I did end up buying it, but some of the info that I've found in various places seems to be contradictory to the markings on my gun. I'll tell you what I have, and maybe someone can help me date it. It's a 12 ga. with 28 in m/f barrels.

Here's what I know:

1. No angel on bottom of receiver.
2. 3 stars in forearm indent.
3. Flat black plastic grip cap.
4. Here's what throws me: the proof marks on the bottom of the barrels. The mark is a normal number 1 followed by two Xs, like "1XX". The 1 is not an I, which would make it Roman Numeral 19. The "normal" number 1 is a bit abnormal, as the horizontal line at the bottom of the 1 is missing. If the markings were IXX or XX, this would suggest a manufacture date in the mid- to late- 1960s. But that doesn't seem to corresspond with the 3 stars or the plastic grip cap.
5. One other thing I can tell you: each piece is stamped with P30004. I haven't found any way to use this info for date identification.

If anyone is able to help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Rick,

You have an interesting situation.

I'm pretty sure that the BL series was introduced to America in 1968. The BL-1 & BL-2 were made until 1973. The BL-3 thru BL-6 were made until 1976.

The XX date code is for 1964. Which should be a bit too early.
There is no IXX date code. There is an XXI code which is 1965, again a bit early.

Maybe part of the date code has worn off??

My son has a BL-3 that was made in 1970. It does have the plastic grip cap.

I had a BL-1 which, if I remember correctly was made in 1969 that had a Prince of Wales grip.

So I'm not sure what the lack of a grip cap means to these models.

The three stars. Are they on the barrel? If so then they indicate modified choke.

I don't have an explanation for the lack of the angel.

Lastly, is S56E on the barrel lug? That seems to be the "other" model designation for a BL-4.

Sorry that I haven't been of much help. I do think that something is missing in regards to the proof code.

Thanks for the post. I've seen this chart before, but it doesn't seem to correspond with othre info I've seen. For example, if the XX or 1XX puts the date of manufacture near 1965, there should be an angel engraved on the bottom side of the receiver and no plastic grip cap (based on what I've seen from other sources). Also, the chokes would be marked with Xs, not M and F as they are. Knowing the exact date of manufacture isn't a huge deal - I guess I'm just curious.
