I'm in the market for a new 20 gauge shotgun to be used exclusively for casual weekend trap shooting. I may also want to put some slugs through it at the local target range occasionally, too, but that's pretty low on my list of "things to do".
The range where I shoot has a "one cartridge max" rule, so speed of reloading comparing an auto to a pump isn't really a consideration. You get one shot whether its a bolt action, pump, auto, or break action.
I'm a bit of a 40-something, 5'-10", 98-pound weakling, which is why I prefer 20 gauges. This is a big reason why I'm considering the Remington 1100 Sporting 20 and its ultra-light recoil. (My current Mossberg 185K 20 gauge bolt action leaves me sore for days.)
I'm also looking for something as lightweight as possible (7 lbs max for a 26-28" barrel). This puts the Remington 870 Wingmaster 20 in the running at 6.25 lbs.
The CZ 720 is intriguing, mostly on account of its low price relative to the Rem 1100 auto loader. I have a CZ Scout 22LR and love it, but unfortunately CZ doesn't make the 720 auto loader itself -- a company in Turkey does. Anecdotal feedback on the CZ 720 is mixed and, to be honest, I don't think it stacks up to the Remingtons.
I am NOT interested in a single shot gun (like the Spartan or the Rossi) or in any flavor of a double-barreled shotgun.
I'm also willing to consider a used 1100 or 870, but the condition must be Excellent (like this fine specimen). Any recommendations regarding these shotguns (or any others that fit the bill), new or used, with a max ceiling of $750 for a NIB gun would be appreciated.
