870 20 gauge LT vs LW???

If I understand correctly there are basically two 870 20 gauge frames, the old ones built on 12 gauge receivers and the newer lightweight scaled down receiver versions.

I ran across some information referring to an LT vs LW 870 20 gauge? Was there these two different versions and if so what was/is the difference. And barrels were not switchable.

I am aware of the "special field" version of the smaller framed 870, and the fact it has a shorter magazine tube, but that does not appear to be what is being referred to.

thanks for any insight.

Remington introduced the LW receiver size on the 20 gauge 1100s and 870s back in the '70s, which is actually the same size as the 28 gauge receivers, after they decided the all steel receiver would handle the stresses. There were some issues with the 1100s, and they superseded the LW20 1100s with the LT20s. There have been no issues with the 870s, and the LW receiver is still in production, even though some of them aren't labelled that way anymore. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been an LT 870.
