Please note. I said special purpose. NOT wingmaster. I said 99% condition. Gun has vent rib, As do all Remington shotguns. They don't make plain barrels anymore.

I wasn't sure what a "Special Purpose" was so I googled it. From what I read, the SP is a predecessor to the 870 Express. In other words, it has a "hardwood" stock and a rough finish on the metal. Does that sound like your gun? If so, it should be worth LESS than a Wingmaster. I wouldn't think your gun would bring any more than an Express.

FWIW, I recently listed a like-new (seriously) 870 Wingmaster .410 on Gunbroker. This was a relatively recent production gun with satin finish on the wood. Again, like new, with the original box. I thought it went too cheap at $1,000. I was expecting it to hit $1,200. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/895140567

(Yes, I know that's crazy . . . about four years ago, I sold a legitimately brand new, direct from distributor, .410 Wingmaster in my old shop. I think the price was just over $700.)

But, to answer the OP's original question . . . it's nearly impossible to predict what a gun will sell for in the current market. I've sold quite a few guns lately and have generally been floored by the prices people are willing to pay. A .410 Remington Express could bring stupid money . . . maybe $600-$800. The only way to find out is to put it on an auction site and see where it goes.

 

I'd never heard of a Special Purpose either, and I too looked it up. It's true that Remington doesn't make plain barrels anymore: they don't make anything anymore. Early 870s could be had with plain barrels. I agree, pricing is totally unpredictable. People are nervous about the future availability of guns, and with Remington out if business, anything goes. I hope Kaboomer can get far more than what he expects. I bought an 870 .410 Wingmaster Skeet in excellent condition about a year ago for $300, but that had to be a fluke

 

There was a large online auction last weekend and one 410 870 brought $970 and another with an "enhanced" receiver brought $1300. You can go to Bauer Auctions to see the auction results.

 

I'm sure Virginian will chime in on the Special Purpose model, but the 12-gauge I bough In the early 90s had walnut wood with satin finish, parkerized metal (I think), and I believe the internals of a wingmaster. I believe they were basically a toned-down hunting model (flat finished wood and metal) of the original wingmaster, not the Sportsman or Express models with hardwood stocks. I don't know if they ever made an SP in .410 or not.

The 870 Special Purposes I have seen were all 12 ga guns. Some with oil finish walnut furniture and matt finish metal in deer guns and bird guns. Others were full camo guns with plastic stocks.

I have seen one .410 that was an express if I remember correctly but it had matt finish walnut stock and forearm. Every other 410 express I have seen has birch wood on it.

Thinking about selling. I have a 140 o/u and a 410 semi auto that I shoot a lot more. Bought the pump. Shot it a couple of times and put it in the safe.
As to express or special purpose. It has NEITHER marked on the receiver. It just says remington 870.The finish is express style. I was just curious as to what it might bring should I decide to move it.

Never saw an 870 in .410 with a 28" barrel.

 

I purchased a .410 Express a few years back. Unlike my 28 gauge express from '94 the .410 does not bear the word Express on the receiver. Neither does my recently purchased 20 gauge Express. I too have never seen a .410 870 with anything other than a 25" barrel. I have not seen one on the Corson barrel website nor could I find reference to one in my Remington 870 book.

 

I find a similar one where asking price of $1,100 was NOT achieved.

As was indicated by others, there is quite a spread in prices. When you that those prices now have to have sales tax and shipping of about $45 added, it is really incredible to me what they are bringing at auction. Good luck!

The Special Purpose 12 gauge is the same coatings as the SP-10 from what I remember.

 

Mine has a 28" full (fixed) choke barrel. Iffen it was a 25" with tubes I would keep it
