I have a nice Remington 870 Express 20 gauge shotgun that I want to give to my grandkids as a "starter shotgun." Today, they are only ages 9 and 6, which is too young. but in a few years....

I would like to find a used 20 gauge buttstock we could shorten, to better fit them. Then as they grew older, they could use the original buttstock. I've seen several old 870 12 gauge stocks for sale, but few 20 gauge models.

QUESTION: Is there are a significant difference between a 12 and 20 gauge 870 stock? Could we easily adapt/cut a 12 gauge to fit the 20? Looks would not be important.

Since their "BUYOUT", Remington is not the high quality company they were for the previous 150 years. What a disappointment.

I recently called their customer service about info on their R-51 9mm handgun, and got a bunch of BS. They now claim there never was a recall on these handguns, although the internet has their 2014 press release on the topic. They won't give out the serial number range for the recalls.

I'll never purchase another Remington product.

Mesa Tactical does make an adapter so a 12 gauge buttstock will fit on a 20 gauge receiver. There are a plethora of 12 gauge 870 stock options out there, so this might increase your options.

Of course you could just buy a Remington 870 20 gauge Compact Jr. 12" LOP stock set...

Of course this stock set is plastic, but it appears to come complete with a recoil pad and installation hardware. This is about as easy as it gets.

I'd just use the correct parts Randy Wakeman listed above. I've never understood the 'cobbled together' mentality ive seen all through the years.
Choate also makes and inexpensive Jr stock and forend for a 20ga for approx $87 at MidwayUSA for both that is very nice.
The adapter mentioned is AKA the 'The Lucy Adaptor'. With that you can put 12ga stocks on 20ga receivers but it wont fit flush because your still bolting on a bigger stock on a smaller receiver.
There are a lot of choices to make a very nice inexpensive youth shotgun that looks factory instead of looking like some hack job that came out of the '50s-'70s.

I have a Remington 870 20 gauge compact with 21 inch barrel I bought for my grandchildren for when they get just a little older. Could not pass up the deal so I bought it now. In the meantime , I have used it a few times to rabbit hunt. As expected the stock is too short even with spacers. When I mount the gun as I normally mount my other guns , I see all of the rib and at 16 yards about 95 percent of the pattern is above the point of aim.

I saw in a previous post that Randy Wakeman referred the OP to the Remington site for replacement stocks. My question is would the regular 870 20 gauge synthetic stock they have listed lower my head down enough to get the pattern closer to 50/50 or 60/40. And what is the LOP of that stock. I have an old 12 gauge Remington 870 Wingmaster that shoots about 50/50.
