I have an 870, 6+1 shot 18" 12 gauge, and i want to add a sling to it. There's a spot that i can attach a sling to the mag tube, but there's nothing on the butt. What can i do about that?

(this one shows sling attachments, but mine is lacking)

If you are using your 870 for HD, lose the sling! It will only get tangled and snagged wen you least want it to. At classes I see the single biggest problem for the tactical SG participants is the damm sling, for moving around and such it is a pain. For standing at a checkpoint for 8-12 hours it is very useful, particularly if you sling it so you can bring it into action like now.
For HD you do NOT want a sling on your weapon.

I bought the same shotgun early last month and mine didn't have the hardware either. If you go the Remington web specification page for this model (http://www.remington.com/products/firea ... _specs.asp) you'll see just under the specifications that it says "Supplied with sling swivel studs". So, I sent an e-mail to Remington's customer service department citing the web page (and photo) and they sent hardware out N/C! You'll still need to drill and tap the stock but that's real easy to do. Tada! :D

I disagree. Like Clint Smith and others say: "A sling is to a long gun what a holster is to a pistol". Either the folks in classes are using some crappy slings or the just don't know how to use them. Slings assist with transitioning to other tasks (sidearm, manipulating objects, etc.) as well as with retention. Two things you DO want on a defensive long gun are a sling and a light source.

There is a reason tactical shotgun courses require a sling.

thanks for the replies guys. I'd definitely like to go with the type of sling that has a slip on attachment over the butt of the gun, rather than drilling and tapping a hole in plastic to put a sling mount in there. for some reason i wouldnt trust it, being its plastic.

I had a 3 point tactical sling when i had my knoxx copstock attached to my 870, but i really didnt care for it. I'd much much rather have just a single strap to be able to throw it on my shoulder when i'm not loading or actually shooting it. I dont like to set it down, or have to carry it by hand when walking around.

could someone point me to something just like that? there seems to be too damn many, and they arent exactly clear as to what type of slings they are

thanks again

i had to drill for a sling on my synthetic 870 a while back... i just got the kit that was probably made for a wood rear end, but it somehow worked. i just took the buttstock off so i can see in there, and carefully drilled away. i think a little bit chipped off the inside but i got it in there and its very snug now.

a trick i found out early with my shotgun is if you are using a cheap nylon sling and the quick release swivels on the front cap, the extra piece i had hanging out of the strap can get caught between the slide and the barrel/mag mount... not sure how to describe it right...
i had to sew that flap of nylon to the main part of the sling and it hasn't happened since
hope thats helpful to someone

Yes, extra pieces of sling are not a good thing. If you are going this route (2 point traditional sling) I highly recommend something like the Uncle Mike's Mountain Sling, which has the quick release swivels already sewn in. And do yourself a favor and go with the 1.25" width sling instead of the 1". You'll be glad you did.
