My wife and I went on vacation last week and she always tries to find somewhere that is close to a club I haven’t shot before. This time it was Backwoods Quail Club.
The club was very nice as well as the staff.
I decided to shoot the orange course. I was told they were tournament grade targets and they definitely were. I usually shoot in the high 70’s low 80’s at the clubs around home, well when I left there, I was ashamed.
Maybe it was a combination of me not shooting my best and some really tough targets, or maybe I should just take up fishing.

Lol. Don’t be ashamed. Those targets are designed to humble you. I was there a few weeks ago. They are stout. I wish that place was in my back yard. I’d be a much better shooter. The orange course is non stop unrelenting regional + level targets.

A bit off topic but I think most people are better off practicing fundamentals and shooting a lot of “medium” targets. It happens all the time at my local club where people will be practicing endlessly on a separator station - while their score would be much more likely to go up if they practiced more quartering birds. Over time, I think you level up and start hitting harder and harder targets.

Anyway, Backwoods is awesome and looking forward to the regional.

That's Rick Hemingway's club, you shouldn't be ashamed or frustrated at your score. That's a favorite club of mine, this year they're hosting the NSCA Southeast Regional and I'm sure he's going to make it a banger.

Eric Dorsey's Hermitage club is another one you might want to check out for a challenge. The SouthEast has a number of clubs and trap setters that will give you more than a challenge.

Backwoods is awesome and the orange course is humbling for sure. Mr. Hemingway and team know how to set some tough targets and to also be great hosts. I second the Hermitage recommendation and would add in Rocky Creek too. Bluefield is about an hour south of Charleston and is a nice course too. Easier than Backwoods and targets set by Hemingway’s crew.
