Please help me decide on a pump gun. I found a Benelli Supernova Tactical with pistol grip stock locally for a pretty good price. The 870p is a little more, but worth it? I haven't seen much for the Benelli aftermarket wise, but the Remington is like a small block Chevy. Please help me decide. Thanks for the help.

There have been over 9 million 870s sold over the years compared to how many Benellis? It is a proven platform that will be around long after the nova has been discontinued. More police and military units use the 870 than the nova for a reason.
I'm not sure what you want to use your gun for, but the uses for an 870 are unlimited. I can't think of any game species in the lower 48 that you couldn't quickly, cheaply, and easily configure an 870 for. Heck, Mossberg even makes barrels for it, that's how popular it is.
It's a clear descion in my book.

while it's true that there is way more after market for the 870 than the super nova, how much stuff do you really need?

the Super Nova comes with a pistol grip stock, and if you dislike that, then there are conventional stocks out there as well. As I recall, the Super Nova Tactical comes with ghost ring sights as well. You can get full length mag tubes, extended safeties, ect, and universal sling mounts, shell followers, and light mounts should all work. Basically, you won't be at much of a loss if you intend to build a Super Nova.

Hello,

I had a benelli nova with a 18" rifle sighted barrel. Yes, it took 3 1/2" rounds, but the 2 3/4" 12 pellet magnum rounds kicked so hard I had trouble getting back on target. I sold it because after taking it to the range, there was no comparison to my 870. The action was no where near as smooth, I hated the forend and it kicked much harder (my 870P has the walnut stock with a limbsaver pad) IMHO the 870 is a better weapon and if you don't like the stock you can change it. With a benelli the stock is all one piece. I paid $300 for the benelli new and $400 for my used 870P plus $30 for the limbsaver pad. I prefer the 870. Although not much difference between my 870P and my wingmaster except for the parked finish. Again just my opinion. Its nice when the US made product is better! Kinda like gibson guitars.

Merry Christmas. luke6-31

It depends on what you want your gun for. I assume you are looking for a tactical gun?

If you want a gun that is absolutely good to go out of the box I would reccomend the Benelli. I've had one for several years and never have had a problem. Benelli has been around for a few years and is backed by Beretta. The nova isn't going anywhere.

If you want a gun you can add a whole bunch of stuff to the 870 is your gun.

I like my nova because I wanted ghost rings. It will also never rust and takes all common 12 gauge rounds. That means scavenging is always possible.

Buy the one you want.

Another Benelli SNT lover here. I bought a Benelli SNT with rifle sights and the Comfor Tech stock halfway though a three day shotgun class because my 870 kept locking shut with cheap ammo. The benelli shot everything I put in it and the Comfort Tech stock managed recoil better than the Walnut LE stock with R-3 recoil pad did. Who cares about aftermarket this and that. Take a class before buying anything to put on whatever shotgun you decide to buy. You'll be surprised how much better the shotgun handles without all the extra stuff on it and how good you'll become keeping a four round tube topped off. I like my Benelli so much I sent off for a tax stamp to have the barrel shortened to 14 inches. The tax stamp came in last monday and the barrel is at www.kingarmory.com geting the work done on it.

Flip.

As many have said the Remington is a good shot gun and so is the Benelli. I have both and as for the kick they both kick the same to me.
But the with 3.5inch in the nova it does kick good and second shots are a little slower because of recoil.
But you really need to shoot them and then chose which one. The locking lugs on the nova are nice and so is the chrome lining in the barrel also you can shoot 3.5 if you wish but a barrel cost what a second shotgun will cost.

I would go with the Benelli if it was me doing it.

I have a number of both 870 tacticals (various) and Benelli's
(Tactical)

Both are good, but....the quality of the basic gun leads me to (if I really have to, which I don't) choose the Benelli.

Why ? overall quality of the Benelli is, (I think) at present, higher than the 870's....that is, bolt and internal receiver parts, and...especially the barrel.

You get a super smooth hard chrome lined barrel with the Benelli......only thing even close in the Remington is the 870 marine (nickel plated) which I also have, but it too is not anything like the quality of the Nova barrel inside.

If you want to play too, get the super nova or, if you like the straight stock (no pistol grip) get the std Nova tactical.

Not wrong with either gun, but, dang, that quality of the barrels on the Nova, super Nova OR Nova Tactical, is hard to ignore .....

Just some thoughts and like I say, I don't have to choose as I have a number of both, ......but if only one, as per above

Thanks for all the help guys, it sounds like I can't go wrong with either one of them. The 870 stands out to me for sheer simplicity and availability of parts for it, I've seen parts at Walmart, but I'd really have to be in a pinch for that. I don't need to hang a bunch of lights and lasers on either one, that would be useless and probably screw up the ballance of either one. They both feel good, but the Benelli does fee a little different. I guess it will just come down to trigger time with them, I'll see what I can do. Thanks again.

I've owned both, and here is why I feel the SuperNova is a better choice:

1) I like the placement of the controls better on the SuperNova than on the Remington.
2) I like the magazine cutoff button in the forend on the SuperNova.
3) The SuperNova is easier to dissassemble and clean.
4) The finish on the SuperNova is far superior to the Remington, and the SuperNova will be more rust resistant.
5) The shell elevator is not spring loaded on the SuperNova, which makes it much easier to load than on the 870.
6) The factory LPA ghost ring sights are the best sights on the market, and they come stock on the Benelli.
5) The factory stock options are far superior than anything else on the market.
6) There are high quality accessories now available for the SuperNova. The only thing missing is a SureFire forend. I especially recommend Mesa Tactical shell carriers, Nordic clamps, and TacStar magazine extensions.

It is true that the 870 is a proven design, and TONS of people swear by them. In my experience, you'll spend more money on an 870 building it up and it still won't be as good a gun as the SuperNova is right out of the box.

That said, buy what you like best.
