Beretta AL391 Urika..... do you HAVE to use the spacers?

Was shooting my cousins Beretta al391 the other day, and seemed like a nice gun. Only problem is that I need a 13" LOP. I saw that his gun came with 2 different spacers, and was wondering if anyone here could tell me..... do you HAVE to use one of the spacers or can you just attach the recoil pad directly to the stock?

Does anyone here know how much the AL391 Urika wooden stock can be cut down?

Man is it a total PITA finding a semi auto with a 13" LOP. It's really starting to piss me off that no companies make a sg with a 13" LOP that isn't a 20g, 24" barrelled youth model.

Thanks!

Sorry, they build shootguns for the average person. You are not one of them it seems.

Browning Gold Sporting Clays model, was actually built for women. It is supposed to be a terrific gun. You would have to buy one used since they aren't making that model anymore. LOP is 13 1\2"
I was going to buy one till I saw that spec. Wow 13"? Are you sure you need that short?
I'm no expert, but I doubt the spacer is more than just to make the fit seem more finished looking. Maybe you would have to drill the holes in the stock a little deeper.
If that will do it for you, I'd go for it!

Sauergrapes.... I am pretty sure that yes, I need a 13" LOP. When shouldering the gun with a proper/natural cheek weld you are supposed to have about an inch between the tip of your nose, and your thumb. I had been shooting clays with my Wingmaster with a 14" LOP for a while, and would always get tired holding it up after a while. It also always felt like I was holding my arms out too far away from my body to support it.

Then I stumbled across a really good article on LOP, so figured I would just try taking the recoil pad off, which made it 13" and brought my nose about an inch away from my thumb. The gun feels WAY more natural/comfortable to shoulder now. I have more control, and don't fatigue as easily.

I'm an average sized person at 5'10" with 34/35 sleeves I believe. I don't know.... seems like a lot of people don't know much about LOP, or go by those stupid old wives tales of measuring the stock against your forearm which makes no sense whatsoever.

Madcity.... interesting! Do you by any chance know what the LOP would be on the AL391 Urika 2 when attaching the pad directly to the stock? Beretta may make really nice guns, but I find their website pretty poorly executed and lacking some info. I can't seem to find anything about 3 different LOP's for this gun (since it comes with 2 spacers) :p

Thanks!

canuckshooter, I think my answer is so simple it must be wrong!

Buy a 391 and have a Kick-Ez or similar pad fitted to a 13" LOP. If you buy a decent used one the cash you save can be spent on the retro fit. The job cost me the equivalent of $70 ish.

The guys who do this are well used to trimming the butt down to size. The pads being rather thicker than the original OEM, they need to chop a bit off the wood to regain the original dimension. Certainly mine was done that way and the chap made a beautifully neat job of it. I had the Kick-Ez fitted because I occasionally use 3" 52 gm tungsten loads that go off with a bit of a bump. Makes for a very versatile gun.

Eug

PS My 391 Urika Field came with two butt pads, one a slim hard plastic thingie, and the other a thicker (by 1/4" or more) gel variety. Is this the case in the US?

Wow, I thought you were like, 5'5" or something. Hey if 13 works for you, go for it. I have read simalar things about gun fit. That formula just doesn't work for me.

A gunsmith should be able to set you up without any problem. Shop around, I've heard some guys charge as much as 200.00 to cut the stock and some charge far less for the same work.
The 391 is a nice shotgun. And it does come with two recoil pads.
Good luck

Hey canuckshooter ! Welcome to Shotgun World,

You can get by with a slightly longer gun if you move your hands back on the stock. If you do that and get more weight on the front foot in your stance a longer shotun is no problem at all. 1.5 " between the thumbs first knuckle and your nose is ok so you could problably shoot a touch longer shotgun. People vary and your style of shooting and stance also are factors in how long your gun should be, but if you lean forward for more weihgt on the front foot you might get a cleaner gun mount too.

13" LoP is pretty short for a person of your height.

I hope that helps.

Astomb... thanks for the advice. What would be the most distance between the tip of the nose and thumb knuckle that you would recommend? I am having a really hard time believing that I am one of the few people in the world with such a short LOP requirement, so maybe I am measuring wrong. Nobody I have talked to around here has any clue when I start talking about LOP, drop at comb etc etc..... Makes it really hard to get any good instruction on how to do things properly.

If you could offer any advice on how to determine what LOP I need, I would greatly appreciate it. If it turns out that I CAN use a shotgun with say a 14" LOP that would open up a LOT of doors, and I would actually be able to buy a Mossberg 930 which I have wanted.

Madcity.... I forgot to ask.... is the LOP on the urika 2 13.25" with the HARD plastic butt pad installed, or is that the LOP with the soft rubber pad installed? Beretta's international and usa websites really suck bad. They say that the Extrema's LOP can go down to 13.18" by not using a spacer, but they don't say that about the urika 2.

13 1/4" is with the soft rubber pad. I believe that the Extrema and the Urika 2 use similar stocks, spacers, etc.
Might want to post on the Beretta board. Someone there would know.

I'm an average sized person at 5'10" with 34/35 sleeves
Now, I'm 6'3 with a 34 sleeve, and I shoot between 14-3/4 and 15 LOP. An English friend of mine is maybe 5'9, 180, shoot the same LOP as me - says he does because he needs his leading hand far out for those driven pheasant......If 13 works for you, go for it, but realize you'll probably need to make modifications. When you're wanking at the makers about LOP, tell them us LH folks would like some cast-on guns too......
