Best Recoil Pad for Mossberg 500 Youth?

I have an older Mossberg 500c (youth) wood stock 20ga...wanting to make it a little better shooter, possibly for my wife as a starter gun (or for me, because it was my first gun, a gift from my dad at the age of 12). I've always taken care of the gun, and it's super nice for it's age (20 years old?). Metal and wood are fantastic, so I'd like to just make it a little better with a nice recoil pad.

Looking at new recoil pads...I saw that Sims has one cut to fit the youth stock 500. I was hoping to extend the LOP from the standard youth stock closer to a standard 14 1/2". Any thoughts? I would rather buy one pre-made than a grind to fit.

Thanks!

Also look at Kick-eez...

To make it a softer shooting gun try some Fiocchi "20-Lite" 2-3/4" shells.

These shells have virtually no recoil, my nine year old was able to shoot 100 rounds of Sporting clays with no complaints.

Get a "Limb Saver" slip on. I use one on my Mossberg 500, 20 gauge when shooting sabot slugs and it makes a BIG difference. Since it is a youth gun the added LOP should not be an issue for her. It will be either the small or medium size slip on. I use a medium size Limb Saver on my standard size Mossberg 20 gauge. You can get them at certain Wally Worlds.

+1 on the Limbsaver recoil pad. We put one on my son's 20 ga, and it made a huge difference.

That said, the Simms is a very good recoil pad that should produce similar results. Be careful though... just because the package has Mossberg 500 on it, doesn't mean it'll fit perfectly!

I've been searching high and low for a pre-fit LimbSaver that will fit the Mossberg 500 wood stock, to no avail. I know they make one for the synthetic stock, but that is a diferent shape from the wood stock.

Also, I bought a pair of 500's together 4-5 years ago, one standard 12 ga, and one Bantam 20 ga for my son, and the recoil pads are identical. No difference in size at all. The youth stock may be shorter, but the end is identical to the full sized stock.

The only pad I've found for these is the Pachmayr Decelerator. Before I buy a couple, I thought I'd make sure I'm not wrong. . .do you folks know of any other brands, specifically the LimbSaver, which will fit the 500 wood?. I think the dimensions are 4.725" x 1.650" (from Pachmayr listed dimensions, looks spot-on using my ruler).

I have heard good things about the Pachmayr Decelerators, but I have a pre-fit LimbSaver on my Mossberg Persuader home defense gun and love it. It's definitely larger than the 500 wood stock, though.

Thanks!

John

Thanks much!

I'm a beginner (just bought my first gun six months ago), and I have a Mossberg 500A 12ga. I'm kinda soft, so every time I fire it, the pain is intense, and I have to stop after a few shots. I hit this forum looking for advice on a recoil pad, and found this thread. After seeing several mentions of the limbsaver here, I went searching for pictures and pricing for the limbsaver:

Then I noticed that my Mossberg already looks like that. Is it possible it already came with a limbsaver recoil pad pre-installed? I bought it for $229 at Dick's Sporting Goods about 4-5 months ago. If I've already got a limbsaver, and am still hurting, maybe I'm just a big wimp. :)

Crazy bonus question: Do you think it would be possible to fit one of these over what I already have for extra padding? Plus it looks really nice:

You can put a slip on over the factory pad. It will make your length of pull (LOP) longer though. To JLV, unless you gun is used, I doubt it came from Mossberg with a Limbsaver. They don't use them from the factory that I know of. I put a Limbsaver on my 930 the day I bought mine. I also have one on my T/C Encore. They are definately worth the money.

I have a slipon pad that I add for spring turkey and shooting skeet during the summer. It fits either of my 500s, a 20 and 12. I think its one of the Pachmyers but I'm not certain.
I use the slip on to add LOP. I don't have any problems during cold weather because of bulky clothes but during the summer it helps a lot.

I think the factory-default pad that I mistook for a limbsaver is just basically a cheaper plastic version of the same concept. Not good enough, though. I just figured out how to remove it, so that's one obstacle down.

I also just ordered the Kick Killer Lace Up - medium size. It's about a half inch too tall, but I'm hoping that won't really matter. When it comes, I'll give it a try over the bare wood stock, and then again over the wood stock with the factory-default pad still on (if it fits over).

Damn this aftermarket stuff sucks you in.
