I'm havin fun now-my son wanted a breacher for the end of his 18-1/2 " barrel Mos 500. I machined him one out of 4140 steel with .375'' holes every 90 deg. and made a kinda safe end ( no spikes). he is not going to use it for breaching-just wanted one-(looks cool you know). Any way my question is I hope it's not Illegal to have this in Texas-as a citizen. I made it removable so if I have to take back off. (I shot it many times with it on, I know it won't loosen up or come off untill I want it to). No gun shops close by to ask. Any replies will be appreciated.

It's perfectly legal. Both Remington and Mossberg sell guns equipped with some sort of breacher. In fact, if the breacher is attached permanently, then the barrel length includes the length of the breacher. It would be legal to cut the barrel shorter than 18" and permanently attach the breacher, as long as the OAL of the barrel and the breacher is over 18"

And where are the pictures???

Sorry, still learning how to post pictures. Being older in my case means being more stubborn-so I'll have to get my son to teach me. Any way the unit mounts as an interferance fit-.0005 larger than barrel, and has (4) 4-40 threaded holes in the breacher every 90 deg.The top one being the sight (socket head cap screw 4-40 thread-head is about same size as a bead) the others being 4-40 x 1/16" set screws.I put a locking compound on the barrel then I heated up the breacher to about 250 deg. F, tapped it on in place and tightened the screws, sand down the small amout of set screws sticking out, Then I re-parkerized the barrel and breacher so it looks factory. If I want to remove I will heat up to about 300 F. remove the screws and pull off with a 4-jaw puller/home made barrel plug. Then I'll sand the end of the barrel if any marks remain and re-parkerize.

I don't think I would feel secure with just (1) screw on top, although I don't think this one would come off if it had no screws. Anyway I have shot a few boxes of rounds through it-including #8 shot, # 4 shot, # 3 buck shot, # 2 (00) buck shot and 1oz slugs. so far no problems. As far as wads gettig stuck the I.D of the breacher is the same as the O.D of the barrell, so there is significant clearance. ( I don't remember the dimensions off the top of my head). As a note when shooting at night the fire is in a nice star pattern every 45 deg. in a circle, viewed from the shooter. ( we shot at night just to see what it looked like-not shooting any game). I have my own "hogans alley" on my property. We used to set up "scenarios" when my son and his buddies were in college-law enforcement.

OK - I'm glad I found this thread because I have a little problem.

I cut my barrel down to 16" thinking that the regulations on my shotgun were the same as on my AR (16"). Now I'm illegal. Looking to figure out how to permanently attach some sort of breaching/muzzle device now to make me legal again without purchasing a 75 dollar barrel.

Can you give me more information or a picture on what you created?

Seriously, delete your post.
Then chop the barrel between the breach and the lug and get rid of it. $75 is a small price to pay to avoid a $100,000 fine and 10 years in the big house. The BAFTE does not joke around with stuff like this.

Besides, the cost to install a quality breacher/break will cost a bit more than a new barrel.

Separate the barrel and receiver (if possible) and store each in a separate place so there is no "constructive possession". Now you no longer have a 'short barreled shotgun' in the eyes of the law as a barrel, by itself, that is less than 18 inches is not a prohibited item. Perform any necessary work needed to extend the barrel before it and the receiver are in the same area again.

If you have a friend at a machine shop, it will probably take him about an hour-maybe 1-1/2hrs to make one how you want it, personally I think you should sweat it on (silver solder or brass), that way its permanate. If you dont know a machinist the cost would be too high. I see the breacher posted by Fallschirmjager for $ 40.00, but it would be too small I.D. to fit and would need to have to inside diameter opened up. Just make sure the length is at least 2" + enough to slide up on the barrel to braze/sweat on-to make you legal. Personally just getting another (maybe used) barrell would be less trouble and probably cost about the same. I make build/stuff all the time, but I don't make items to sell. Sorry.

Thats basically what I'll try. I have access to a good steel tubing supply for nothing. I'll have the ID bored to the external barrel dimension and basically make a muzzle brake and then weld it on with 4 equal holes around the brake (like pinning a threaded brake) and maybe some tacks on the bottom where it slips over the barrel. If I have full confidence that its legal and reasonable confidence that it won't fly off when shot - then it will be a cheap fix. Its just a mossberg 500 that sits in my closet.

Does anybody know off the top of there heads what the outside diameter of the Saiga 12 barrel, and the outside diameter of a Mossberg 500 is? I'm trying to see if i can use that sight on my 500. I'm in the works to make an iron sight system on my 500. Trying to see what i can come up with.
There must be three possible outer diameters for Mossberg 500 barrels at the muzzle, usually .860" or .865", although my 500 barrel is .853" at the end (18.5") and .855" one inch back (17.5"). kingjoey once told me that matches the 590 barrels, IIRC, but I don't have a heavy barrel. :?

I do not know the outer diameter of a Saiga 12 barrel, but I have a secure channel to a highly secret mall security company, and I will reply with an encrypted answer if no one else answers you before me, Monkey.

Thanks, man. I could measure the diameter of my 500, because i have a dial indicator, but it's at work, so it's not doing me any good, now. I was just lazy and didn't want to do an extensive search on the diameters of the barrels, in hopes that some one might know both diameters. I know that the 500 barrel tapers down from receiver to end, but i think that the Saiga is the same diameter all the way. I could be mistaken. I dunno. The reason why i'm asking is because i've found a couple of iron sight add ons for various shotguns, and i wanted to see if it would be able to clamp securely on the end of my 500 before i go buying them. I suppose if they didn't quite fit, i could come up with something. I'm pretty mechanically inclined. I would hope so, since i'm an ASE certified repair tech. lol

I found these two and was pondering which one would work the best. After one of these, then i'll have to come up with a rear iron sight to hopefully match the same height so i won't have to much elevation adjustment to compensate for accuracy.

Since i have the Mesa High Tube adapter on my 500, the rail that comes with it sits up higher than the normal picatinny that bolts to the top of the receiver, so i'm sure height tolerances will be off because of that. I'm gonna have to figure out something for height differences for whatever rear sight i get, in accordance with whatever front sight i buy. I'm pretty confident i can figure something out, and have it spot on. Sorry, OP for changing your thread into my personal sight hunting quest. :(
