Breathing in gun powder

My Beretta A300 Outlander has the ejection port to the right, and I shoot left handed, so I end up breathing in the gun powder after I shoot.

It irritates my throat, but is it harmful? And, how do I stop that from happening, besides using a respirator?

Irritation is your body telling you that something is harmful. How harmful, I don't know, but if it hurts your throat, you shouldn't be doing it on a regular basis. I second the suggestion of getting a gun that doesn't eject out the right side. You can get a bottom-eject pump like the Ithaca Model 37 or Browning BPS, a break-action gun of any type, or a lefty-eject auto ( Benelli sells several: http://www.benelliusa.com/shotguns/bene ... -types.php ).

After a single day shooting a right-handed auto (a Winchester, don't know the model) as a southpaw, I went and bought myself a Browning BPS. It was a great decision for $575.

I remember reading years ago that the gases emitted from smokeless powder burned in a self contained cartridge was safe, but that if you burned that same smokeless powder without the cartridge, for instance just set some on the ground and burned it; the gas emitted would be toxic. I don't know if this is true, but I do remember reading it somewhere.

All I know for sure is I've shot a lot of right handed Remington 1100's with no ill effects.

You were the one posing the question and then stated the smoke was no big deal. Which is it? My question to you is how much is an eye worth? Gases towards the face because you are shooting a RH'ed gun might be okay from normal shooting. If the gun fails and more than some smoke from a fired shell comes at your face, you might be looking for a glass eye. Stop being a cheap-skate and just get a correct gun with a port on the left side. Or switch to a break open gun and not have worry about eating a failed bolt or other metal parts some day in the future. Or at least wear a very good pair of shooting glasses!
