Browning Gold Hunter - cartridge not fully retained in magazine tube

I have a 12g Browning Gold Hunter that I've owned since new. It's done very little work (<500 rounds) and I've just started using it again after more than 10 years.

I've noticed that cartridges loaded into the magazine are not fully retained in the magazine tube; they stick out of the tube about 15mm and are only held by the cartridge stop that protrudes from the underside of the bolt (see pic). Otherwise the gun functions and

cycles OK.

I had in mind that the cartridges should be fully retained in the magazine tube by the forward end of the bolt release. However, I can't see how that comes about, as the release button needs to be depressed to bring that catch out from the wall of the receiver to engage the rim of any cartridge in the magazine tube.

Any ideas as to what is going on - or is this normal? It's been so many years since I've used it that I can't remember exactly how this should be.

A web search hasn't provided any answers.

Many thanks.
