Yes you can. Most modern guns have changeable choke tubes. Why would you not be able to? Been listening to the tactacool crowd? When a 3run target calls for "buckshot". I have found that mod was the best over all choke to use.
In my experience, I found that 00 buck shoots hardest in the modified tubes. I have tried them all against the patterning board, and the mod tube won out
About 20 years ago, I worked extensively on developing BK loads, to maintain tight patterns. My observation was the same as that of GBertolet. Additionally, the tightest patterns came from factory modified-choke barrels, rather than screw-in chokes.
You can absolutely shoot buckshot through a choke. Every shotgun is gonna pattern buckshot differently. My mossberg 835 with 20" barrel shoots the tightest pattern with an extra full choke at 10 yards. This is with mil Winchester 00 9 pellets, I have not tried #1 buck or any buffered loads but they will pattern different than the Winchester load.
IMP (1/4) worked best for me a few months back. I loaded 00 cast in wheel weight over fibre wads buffered with polyethylene from BPI. 9 pellets in a 9 inch pattern at 30 yards. I was astounded.
When I deer hunted with dogs I used an extra full Turkey choke with 0/00/#1 buckshot. It gave the TIGHTEST patterns of all my chokes........Most of my fellow hunters used full or extra full also.........You need to hit the pattern board to see what works best for you. Nobody in my group shot anything more open than modified.
I have done quite a bit of buckshot testing. We hunt deer with BK anI have found one truth- no two guns/ammo/chokes combo are completely repeatable.
I have 2 835 Mossbergs that are identical and prefer different ammo/chokes for best patterns. I have shot everything from IC to XXF. Only Federal FliteControl wads prefers open chokes- Full-XFull is the choice for 10” patterns at 40 yards.
My 935 puts 18 00 pellets in a 1 gallon milk jug at 40 yards.
The OP said nothing about claybirds. Many here shoot other things than clay pigeons.
