choke tubes shooting loose

when I shoot my 391 gold sporting with the optima extendend tubes I have noticed that the choke tube will get very loose if I do not tighten them every few shots (10). This is a little annoying. After maybe 50 rounds without tightning I notice that the tube had backed out maybe a half turn, I think that is a little to much to be acceptable. Is there any thing that I can do to fix this? How do loose choke tubes effect patterns? The tubes do not have slots for a wrench, do you recomment a "friction" type of wrench?

I think I would be much more worried about how some fraction of a shot charge and wad racing up the barrel at 1250 fps, might get under the loose choke's skirt and what it could/would do to the choke and muzzle! (Not necessarily a "one shot" deal, but a build up until it reaches a critical point.)

Ever see the results of such, with a choke not seated well? It ain't purty!

I think that any manufacturer that produces chokes that do not present some sort of "interference fit", or some means to mechanically do so, at the end of the threads/seating area, is amiss!

Some folks have notches machined in their chokes, others rely on heavy grease or just check them after every station. PIA!

I like the way that PolyChoke has theirs set up. No notches, but a small external, shallow hole in the external part of the choke barrel, and a small spanner wrench supplied with their PolyChoke II screw in models. Not only the best choke of the bunch, but the best tightening system as well.

Just get into the habit of tightening them between shooting stands.
I just ain't gonna do that! Too much PITA. (Vic, for your benefit, the word that "A" stands for has an R in the middle and an E on the end. For the Yanks, just two S's. )

I got Briley to cut some notches in a set of Seminole tubes so I could use a Briley Speed Wrench. Right now most of my tubes are Brileys with notches - I just have one tube of another brand with no notches, and I'm planning to cut notches with a Dremel Tool.

Crank down on it with a Briley wrench and it will stay.

My extended Angleports used to do that also. After putting about 800 rounds through them, they don't come loose anymore. I can't explain it, but there it is. I still have the habit of checking them as I move between stations.

The supplied Beretta factory (spanner type) wrench keeps my Optima Ext choke tubes tight enough.
PITA sometimes "getting a grip" in the shallow slots thou
The supplied spanner works reasonably well. (I've wondered how many owners know what it is for.) However, I still check the chokes frequently.

The grease trick did nothing for me. Perhaps I needed use a thicker grease.

I have a wrench made by Briley that is cone-shaped. You put it into a choke tube that has no notches and it works by friction. Another trick for tubes that are working loose is to coat the threads of the choke tube with clear fingernail polish, let it dry (Important) and then screw it in. Makes it fit more snugly.

Grease, beeswax, fingernail polish, whatever..... all of them will work in some cases, not in others. I tried them all and nothing worked. I also tried Carlson's wrench, and it works, but it is not as easy to use as Briley's wrench if there are notches in the tubes.

Have you tried white teflon plumber's tape? What I had to do with a 28 gauge Rem 1100 - worked great
