If you feel you broke the bird and someone else on your squad seconds the protest, shouldn't the scorer give you the hit?
[/QUOTE]
No sir! The referee is the arbiter of facts, not the peanut gallery. If the referee calls it lost, it’s lost, protest from bystanders notwithstanding

We used to see quite a few dusted targets in Intl. skeet as the target profile with ridges and flat top instead of a dome and the re enforced rim were designed to deflect light or insignificant hits. Also so they could be thrown at faster speeds without breaking at the machine.

I'm primarily a skeet shooter. I was asked to score at a high school trap tournament. One of the coaches (not for the squad that was up) complained that I was calling "dusted" targets dead. To me if I see something come off a target, however small, it is a visible chip. At what point does dust become a chip?
I would complain too. Dust is dust. And a dusted bird is a lost bird.

From the ATA rule book:

The referee/scorer shall rule, “LOST”:
1. When the contestant fires and fails to break the target whether missed
completely or when only dust falls from it. A “Dusted Target,” is a target
from which there is a puff of dust, but no perceptible piece is seen; it
is not a dead target...

It has never been the rule that dust=a break. So Dave, you’re on a roll here. What other rules do you ignore?
Your answer substantiates my dislikes of trap shooting. I've refereed tens of thousands of skeet targets and all of the questionable targets I called would have been ruled dead in skeet.

If a high percentage of your targets bring up this issue, you need to work on hitting them better. I learned this from watching the top shooters in my club being upset with off center losses I would have been delighted with. That was around 8,000 targets ago. Now I'm becoming like them...
