Federal 20 ga hulls

I picked up a number of Federal 20 ga hulls yesterday with the intent of reloading them. These are NOT the Top Gun or target hulls. They appear to be field hulls with brass washed bases and plastic base wads instead of the paper or fiber base wads found in the target hulls. I cannot find any recipes for these hulls with plastic base wads. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough. They appear to have a bit more volume than the target hulls. I would like to load them for target use with 7/8 oz of #8 using International Clays and a Winchester primer. Any suggestions. I have a variety of wads on hand.

I spoke with someone at Federal two weeks ago and he told me that's the new style plastic base wad Federal is using in all their 20 gauge hulls.

Just an FYI... Federal only makes one kind of 20 gauge hull and they use it in all their 20 gauge offerings from Gold Medal to Top Gun to field loads.

The rep told me the currently available load data is NOT relevant to the new hull/base wad combination.

Thanks. That explains why there is no reloading data on this new style hull. I only picked them up to load once and discard. Therefore, I am going to trash them. I appreciate your answer.

Thats hilarious! Don't reload Top Guns? Then why publish reloading data on the Alliant Reloading center? By the way, a company also owned by Vista Outdoors. Sounds like the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. I don't hunt anymore so I don't need them for hunting. I really don't need them at all, but thought they would be good to shoot in my semi auto and if they get lost, no big deal. I do like and reload the old Federal Gold Medal Target in 12 ga. They are very good hulls, but that's about it for the Federals.

Curious to where you see "top gun" hulls on alliants website? Was it a special brochure they put out or something?

While it's true in 20ga all federal hulls are of the same design. The game/steel loads (6pt) and the gold medal I have are of noticeably thicker plastic than top gun. I do not load the top guns often, I try and get the thicker ones that crimp nicer.

might as well keep them since that's all your gonna be seeing from them for at least the next 6-7 months.
they changed their 12 Ga. hulls not too long ago to be exactly the same as your seeing.
the conclusion there was to simply use a longer wad with the same data to keep the crimps flat.

Dug this up because I’ve been looking to add to my 20ga hull stash and shooting Fed field&clay lately purchased at Walmart in 4 packs. Upon further inspection, the shells I’m purchasing at wm are a mix of both the old paper basewad and the new plastic basewad. Primer color differs as do the exterior markings on the hull even though the box does not, red box. Fwiw
