Fiocchi vs Gun clubs

I am looking for some input from some f your own experiences. I have come to or evolved my shooting to try to break those 5-8 birds to improve my scores from the low to mid 80's to upper 80's to 90 at my local shoots. I have tightened my chokes up to a light mod in lower barrel and an improved mod in the upper. Never taking them out. I want to know that if I miss it is from not being at the right spot when I pull the trigger and not a choke or shell. With all of that being said, I am trying to use a little better shell for my practice. I have been using Winchester or Federals I order from Academy for 54.00 a case and I also been tried some Gun Clubs I can get locally for 49.00 a case. All have been 1 1/8 oz 7.5s 1200fps. I have ordered a few cases of 1oz 7.5 Fiocchi. They are about 12.00 more a case. I have not been able to see a big difference yet. Maybe I need to shoot more. Are the Fiocchi shells in your guys experience a that much better shell or is it just good old marketing combined with a neat clear hull?

It depends on the specific shell. The "Shooting Dynamics" line uses economy components. The "Exacta Line" is the more upscale line, including such shells as Crushers and White Rhinos. They are a clear notch behind AA's and STS loads.

Gun Clubs have very soft lead. For a promo shell I find the Estate Super Sport to be about the best. https://www.trapshooters.com/threads/in ... on.465097/
+1 And the only way to see how a certain brand of shells like your gun/choke combo is the pattern board. And after trying 3 different brands of shells in 2 different make of chokes the Estate Super Comps were the best of them, and at a price I liked- winner all the way around :) I shoot the Estate 1oz @ 1235 FPS.

The other 2 brands were Clever T4's and Fiocchi Little Rhinos. YMMV :)

High value practice loads - Win. Super Target and Rio Game & Target, $54.90/flat at Academy.

Registered targets - AA and Rio Target. Have also used Clever Magic 3, Bol D' Or, and Grand Italia along with Fiocchi Crusher Nickel, Bornaghi Star, and Aguila. They are all Good, but tournament time, AA and Rio Target Sporting or Rio Trap. Remington STS, obviously good, but too costly.

Fiocchi vs Gun Clubs for practice - hands down, Fiocchi Shooting Dynamics.

First of all, kudos to you for going to the tighter chokes and "just leaving 'em in"! I went to this a few years ago and it improved my scores dramatically. After getting used to this I went from about 80% to 90% hits. You might even think about putting the LF in the other barrel as well, that's what I did and never looked back.

As for the shells, I started shooting the one ounce Monarch light dove shells from Academy sports and love them. One would think that the 1350 fps has a pretty good kick, but honestly, I feel the recoil is the same as the 1 1/8 oz. gun clubs, absolutely no difference to me. After about 20 flats of these I have yet to have even the first issue running them through my browning o/u. To make these shells even better, last April, Academy ran a sale of 20% off, and I bought 10 flats of these for 400 bucks. $4 a box, no tax and free shipping to your door. Even $4.99/box every day is still a good price. I'm hoping they run the 20% off again soon! Good luck and good shooting.................Perry

I have been shooting nothing but Fiocchi for about 4 years. I use 1oz #7.5 1,250 Shooting Dynamics (their budget line) for practice and the same shot size and the load of Exacta (their premium line) for competition and I love both. While the former is a bit dirty, there is no change in feel between them. And, I feel like slightly better shot used in the latter is more consistent especially on targets 40 yards and out. Another my favorite shell is Bornaghi Gold.

Listen to this if you really want to improve:

http://behindthebreak.com/pat-lieske-29/

Do like Pat suggests and start to journal your performance. Figure out the types of targets you're missing and focus on those until you can't do it wrong. Once you have done that move on to the next item you need to work on.

No matter what choke combination or shotshell you choose, you need to have confidence in them and then focus on the above and like Terry said, it almost certainly isn't the shell.

Not from a cost perspective.
Sure it would. Shoot the same low cost shells shells for both? Practising with one thing, then competing with another doesn't make any sense.

Would a golfer play practise rounds with range balls, then play in a tournament with Callaways ?

If you use enough choke the shell does not matter so much. I like Clever T3 or T4 ammo, but I have shot lots of Gun Clubs. The breaks are more impressive with the Clevers, but no difference in scores. Unless you are a top level Master Class shooter, put in Modified chokes and feel confident that the lower priced shells are better than you.

What happens if you have the right shell, but the wrong chokes? Or the wrong shell, but the right chokes?
ysr - I know you're just continuing the discussion and I know that you already know this but it is rarely the arrow. It is almost always the indian (can I even say that anymore).

Good shooters can put shot out of a skeet choke on a target at 40 yards or more. Would a person who's trying to help another shooter (a newer shooter) suggest that - no. Just like Anthony Materese recently stated in his BtB podcast - you don't start a baseball player with an 80mph fast ball - you start with t-ball. Keep the newer shooters who are asking about what shell is better for this or that focused on what they need to be - killing targets that should be shot by their 'peer' group. And second, understanding that those are the targets that they cannot miss if they have competitive expectations for the long run. The person who focuses on those basics will eventually shoot enough different ammo to begin to understand that the ammo rarely matters (and that is brand, speed, shot size, etc). Shooters who learn how to shoot will put whatever ammo they have on the targets that they should be able to hit. All of that boils down to confidence.

And if you want to throw chokes into the discussion - if what used to be the PCSA pros all shoot different chokes (Diane and Bill M. - LM, a bunch of others M or IM) and they all say that misses are in feet and chokes get you inches - why would it matter to the rest of us mere mortals? It doesn't. It all comes back to confidence. If you like your breaks with a specific choke - shoot it. If you're a choke changer - change them.

The real answer to the OP question is the quickest way to go from point a to point b (80 to 90 in this case) is to spend the several hundred dollars on some instruction. Try the Fiiochi shells and see what you think. But bouncing from brand to brand of ammo in search of 5 to 10 points on your card probably isn't going to get it done. There is something else that is holding you back at this point in time.

Lastly, all of this is based off of a paragraph of information, never having seen the OP shoot or knowing him. I could be WAYYY off base........

Final thought - If you really are going after those 5 to 8 points on your card and you're not journaling your performance to find those presentations that you struggle with - you really should. It is pretty easy to see commonalities especially if you're only dropping 15 total each event.

Terry is absolutely correct. I'm shot my personal best, 93, with Academy Monarchs today beating my AA shooting partner. I usually only shoot Remington Golds at registered events. Won't be doing that any more.
My personal best is 100 and I shot 198/200 at the Texas Trapshooter's Association Zone V shoot using.........RELOADED AMMO!

You shot 100 straight in registered target Sporting Clays? Or Trap?
