OK Burnt Powder... you started it..
'like shooting fish in a barrel'..
Has anyone ever done it? Do you lead the fish to account for the image offset cast by light refraction? I know not to put the barrel of a gun INTO the water to shoot.
MythBusters showed that diving deep into water is a good defense from bullets (just like in the movies where the guy is escaping under water and the bullets just sink like rocks around him. By the way, they blew out the water column base when they tried a shotgun.
Do the fish have to be in season?

You don't have to aim or lead the fish, the concussion gets em. Thats why shooting fish in a barrel is easy.

As a kid I used to sit up on the ridge over a river and shoot a .270 into the middle of a big pool of water. Fish would float to the surface and remain stunned for a couple of minuites.

And yes I know now that that was illegal but I couldnt get hold of any dynamite.

In order to keep this thread relevant in the RELOADING forum, I have to ask; what is the best powder for shooting fish in a barrel?

Since someone mentioned that it is the concussion that gets the fish I would recommend Longshot.

Well I've "fished" with a guy that used a pipe bomb as a "lure". He caught lots of fish with it.

I know a guy who got caught dynamiting fish one day, the Warden was writing him up and he just handed a lighted stick of dynamite to the warden and asked him? You going to just stand there or are you going to fish?

A long, long time ago, in a place far, far away we would put the mussels of our m16s in the water to shoot fish. Also did fish fragin for the yards. If you dont know what I am talking about then you wernt there.
And the Nungs and the Meo. Cuts on the arms from elephant grass, leaches, rain forever. Been there done that and DON'T want to go back. Hoo Yah.

Use to shoot them all the time with a Garand. A few miles from home two river converge. A friend and I would walk out on a huge hillside that was pratically all rock, right down to the rivers edge and shoot fish as they came by...mostly sewer bass (carp) etc. we each had a Garand
We quickly discovered you dont actually have to hit them. The bullet impact throws a plume or guyser about 30 feet high and the concussion would kill the fish outright or stun it for a good while.... The key is shallow water no more than 3 feet and being close enough for the concussion to really rock it!
Some of the best bass fishing I ever did was on a pond with a M-1 Garand and a pair of waders.
The powder was of course IMR 4895 the powder of choice during WWII.
( meeting reloading thread standards)

does anybody remember a white, powdered chemical called "rhode-n-on?" it's intended use was for something else, but when added to a pond it would bond with the oxygen in the water and bring every fish in there to the surface, gasping for air. didn't hurt to eat them, i guess, because we did. and then after a couple of days you could restock the pond with the fish of your choice. thanks

thanks for that, red pill. we were just a bunch of little kids when my grandfather decided to restock the pond closest to the house. the pond was only about a half acre but it was covered with brim and catfish and we were all having a great time wading in there and carrying the fish in our hands back to buckets on the bank. then those 40 pound catfish started coming to the top! it scared us to death. we swam in that pond not ever imagining that there were catfish in there as big as us!

1 1/4 lbs C-4, 1 Non electric Blasting Cap, 6 in M-60 time fuse, 1 Mechanical igniter, 2 six inch pieces duct tape, and a 2 pound rock. Lure of choice for the South Pacific.

if it swims, it floats to the surface
