GU 2025

Loaded up some test loads to pattern test. All were 16.5 gr. WSF in the AAHS hull or Gunclub hull with 7/8 oz., 7.5 using the old WWAA20 wad or a modified DRV 20 (leg. sec. replaced with a 1/2" fiber wad). I thought I had loaded the GU 2025 in a Win. CF hull years ago with about 16 gr. of unique but that can't be right. It won't fit in either hull. It had to be a different hull or a different wad. Anyway, I have WSF, HS 6, a little but not much unique and various other powder that won't work due to improper burn rate. The only load data I can find is for powder I don't have or can't currently find. Does anybody know of data for either WSF or HS 6 with this wad in any hull? It was designed for Euro hulls so I thought someone here might know. I load all types of hulls.

Ballistic Products sell this wad as the SG20L and I have the full data sheet on it. I also have the BPI data for the GU2021/SG20M.

For the powders you have on hand, the data for the 2025 only includes Unique in Cheddite & Fiocchi SW hulls. I use both wads and don't see how you could get 7/8 to fit with the 2025 in Remington or Winchester hulls. BPI shows 18.0/Universal with 3/4oz in the Remington Premier and 14.0-14.5 Green Dot in the Winchester AAHS.

Even using the roomier SG20M it's hard to get more than 3/4oz in the AAHS, but you can fit 7/8 into a Remington Gun Club. You could probably have used 16.0/Unique with 7/8oz in the old AACF hull, but not in the new AAHS.

Cerberus, It was very obvious 7/8 oz. wasn't going to work with that wad in a HS or gunclub hull. It was quite a while ago so it had to be a CF hull & was probably one of the higher capacity wads. I have some Cheddite & Estate hulls, also plenty of Federal hulls. I think Estate uses Cheddite hulls. Now, with the info. you just gave me, it is just a matter of finding a combination that will work. I prefer brass head hulls due to the salt water environment but steel head hulls will work if precautions are taken to protect them. Also, the 3/4 oz. load will work for closer birds. Thanks, you have been a big help.

Your best bet is to find some Rio or Nobel Sport hulls. The Rio is the longest 2.75" 20ga hull I know of, with the Nobel Sport a close second.

The Herters hulls are all Cheddite, but in Estate I have only seen the Cheddite in 12 gauge. Not saying they don't make them, just that I haven't seen them.

Cerberus, I pattern tested my loads & all functioned as advertised. Using the WSF loads you gave me for the 2021 wad as a baseline, 16.5 gr. is pretty mild in the Estate/Cheddite hull but it gave a pretty clean burn & believe it is adequate for most small game or clay shooting applications. I don't want to increase the powder without pressure data. As would be expected, the same powder charge in a HS hull with the WWAA or modified DRV shot a bit stronger.
The container the Estate hulls were in had "Cheddite" written on it. Right or wrong, I thought they were Cheddite. They are at least very similar. The fit was good, I think WSF is denser than Unique. My chrono. broke so I don't have velocities. I need to get a chrony. Thanks for the help.

Cerberus, did you get your data sheet from BPI? If so, where on their web site can it be found? Thanks!

I was curious about the SG20L myself... does the data sheet have any loads not published in their advantages manual?
I got the data sheet from BPI, just called and asked them to email it. I don't think it's on the website.

Since I don't have the Advantages manual, I don't know how they compare, but if you guys will PM with an email address I'd be happy to pass it on to you.

Im glad to hear they worked out for you. I have some ESF on hand but haven't started using it. Your real-time experience will come in handy when I do. Thanks.

I would be really interested in seeing those hulls, if they are indeed Cheddite. All of the Estate 20ga hulls I have seen are simply the Federal paper-base hull with a gold color rim. I have to say that IMO these Federal/Estate PPB hulls are among the easiest I have worked with. As long as the component stack is anywhere near close to fitting they are very forgiving and accommodate a wide range of components.

Another advantage of these is that I can use pressure tested data with current components to load 7/8 with my ample supply of Green Dot & CSB-1.

I would be glad to send you a sample of the hulls. They are not paper base, they have a plastic BW. I could email you a pic.. I deal with high tec. computer applications for precise geodetic positioning every day but don't have the patience to deal with computer gadgetry & the ever changing world of micro crap, otherwise I would post a pic..

No need for pics, I know your experience well enough to take you at your word. Do you have the boxes these came from, and if so do they look different from the regular Estate's?

I love the Cheddite 20ga hulls but the only ones I see laying around are the Herter's, and very few of them are found.

No, I don't, these are older hulls & I picked them up on a dove field. I put them in a plastic bag & wrote "Cheddite" on it because, best I can recall, I read somewhere that they were cheddite hulls. I have never seen the current production "Herters" hulls or the current production Cheddite 20 ga. hulls. A few years ago loads in these hulls were quite common. I am in the market for some 3" 20 ga. hulls to load bismuth & tungsten base shot for ducks. I'm thinking 1 & 1 1/8 oz. loads. I see them 4 sale but think I need to match the load to the hull.

Ballistic Products is probably your best bet for the 3" hulls and the data and components for both types of shot.

Last time I looked they had a good asortment of brands and the prices seemed fair.
