Hornady 366 Problem

I am having a problem with my Hornady 366. There is friction between the charge bar cam and the charge bar. When the 2 reach a certain point the maching stops. I have lubricated everything that I can, but still have the problem. There is some red paint that has been rubbed off the cam and a small groove is starting in the right side of the cam. I have used this for years, but this just started.

Hello nickelsmith,

I can't answer you post but thought I'd give you a welcome to SGW. I'm sure you'll get the answers you're looking for.

It sounds like you have something fouled up inside the charge bar housing which is causing the charge bar to bind. Check that the bushing are in there correctly. Also check that the levers for the powder and shot "cutoffs" are correctly in place and not binding. Lastly, check that the screw that holds the charge bar housing and powder and shot hoppers is firmly in place. If you've properly lubricated the machine as you said (especially the cam bearing), then it almost has to be a foreign object or something out of alignment in the charge bar housing. My guess is that the measure plate or measure plate spacer is not properly seated.

Thanks for your replies and welcome. I think I was registered here once before as it has my email address, but I cant remember what name I used. The screw was loose and I tighened it, but still have the problem. Since the hoppers have powder and shot in them, I can't take the assembly apart, can I?

Sure you can take the assembly apart. That's how you change the shot and powder bushings. You HAVE changed the shot and powder bushing before haven't you?

As Tom said, just remove the screw on the side, turn off the shot and powder shutoffs, and lift the assembly out and up off the frame. Tilt the powder and shot tubes and pour the shot and powder into separate containers. Then remove the charge bar out the rear of the housing. The measure plate will fall out at the same time. Check for any obstructions and then reassemble. My guess is that something has become wedged in there and that is limiting the travel of the charge bar. I've never had that happen to me in the many thousands of round of reloading I've done, but I guess it's possible that it could happen. When reassembling, be sure to get the powder shutoff slide spring in there properly or it can cause the slide to bind. It's actually much simpler than what the written description sounds like. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I turned the seal upside down and reinstalled it. I got it back together, it took some time, but it works pretty slick. I need to order a new pawl and shell plate. Both are pretty well beat up. I find it hard to believe that I am going to all of this work for 2 or so boxes of shells. Actually, it is well worth it. I remember once in South Dakota when another hunter commented negatively on my using handloads. I take pride in them and the reloading process always makes me remember the good times hunting in the past and those to come. Again, thanks so much for your first class assistance.
