I had a great time Saturday shooting the tournament at Rock Ridge Sportsmen's Club in Davis Junction, Illinois. If you read this early enough on Sunday you can still make it out there.
Located near Rockford at 14755 Edson Rd, telephone 815.382.1232, the club hosts monthly tournaments that can be shot on Saturday or Sunday and offers 2-100 target events utilizing 2 different shooting boxes at each of 14 stations. The next event is the Illinois North Zone May 21-23.
Saturday morning was on the cold side of cool but the place sparkled. I've been shooting here for over 15 years and what I saw really impressed me. The farm fields were just starting to sprout, leaves were forming on the trees, grass was cut, many of the pheasant hunting fields had just been burned, fresh gravel was on the cart paths and you could see that lots of time and effort had been invested in the place. The recent change in ownership has been really good to this club.
The huge attraction here is the sporting clays area. It is not flat and we are in Northern Illinois. Who would have thought that? I don't think there is more than 20 square feet of flat, level ground to be found. The land rolls, drops, rises and undulates along with trees, 60' (?) drop offs and water all playing with your brain as you try to determine if the target is curling up, down or flying flat.
Yesterday I saw more different colors, sizes and types of targets than I've ever seen thrown in a tournament. It is like someone pointed at a target catalog and said, "Give me 10 cases of every SKU in your product line". Also new was the addition of a third trap at over half the stations. You might shoot A/B on report the first time around and B/C true from a different shooting box on the second round. The concept works in FITASC and works just as well here.
If anyone has some tips to offer on the Blue station 11 L to R true pair, I'm all ears.
