I had a great time Saturday shooting the tournament at Rock Ridge Sportsmen's Club in Davis Junction, Illinois. If you read this early enough on Sunday you can still make it out there.
Located near Rockford at 14755 Edson Rd, telephone 815.382.1232, the club hosts monthly tournaments that can be shot on Saturday or Sunday and offers 2-100 target events utilizing 2 different shooting boxes at each of 14 stations. The next event is the Illinois North Zone May 21-23.
Saturday morning was on the cold side of cool but the place sparkled. I've been shooting here for over 15 years and what I saw really impressed me. The farm fields were just starting to sprout, leaves were forming on the trees, grass was cut, many of the pheasant hunting fields had just been burned, fresh gravel was on the cart paths and you could see that lots of time and effort had been invested in the place. The recent change in ownership has been really good to this club.
The huge attraction here is the sporting clays area. It is not flat and we are in Northern Illinois. Who would have thought that? I don't think there is more than 20 square feet of flat, level ground to be found. The land rolls, drops, rises and undulates along with trees, 60' (?) drop offs and water all playing with your brain as you try to determine if the target is curling up, down or flying flat.
Yesterday I saw more different colors, sizes and types of targets than I've ever seen thrown in a tournament. It is like someone pointed at a target catalog and said, "Give me 10 cases of every SKU in your product line". Also new was the addition of a third trap at over half the stations. You might shoot A/B on report the first time around and B/C true from a different shooting box on the second round. The concept works in FITASC and works just as well here.
If anyone has some tips to offer on the Blue station 11 L to R true pair, I'm all ears.

Andrew has been doing a great job managing the club over the last year and half or so. He is also starting to turn into a really good target setter. The terrain and Andrew's use of the terrain really make the place stand out. He move the course around a lot so it never really is the same month to month. They don't have the amenities as Northbrook or some other clubs but actually like the sporting clays course way better than Northbrook.

I think a lot of people that will be 1st time customers during the North Zone shoot will be pleasantly surprised.

I plan on shooting today. Blue for sure maybe both.

I didnt fair to well on 11 during the shoot but went back to it afterwards and figured it out (for me today at least). I was able to consistently kill the pair taking the Green target early while it was still raising under power and getting to the orange target about about the apex before it started dropping. During the shoot I tried the green right after the apex and the orange will it was dropping and more of quartering rather than full crossing shot. I kept missing the green but hitting the 2nd shot.
