Hi fellow Kolar-shooters,
I was wondering whether anyone had ever repaired the wood on their high-gloss/varnish Kolar with success? I have a few 'war wounds' and was wondering what the process would be to restore it....or whether I should just leave it alone?! :?
Thanks for your thoughts!

You don't really "repair" a stock finish, unless you have a fairly recent and fairly minor mark. SOP is to strip both pieces completely and refinish. Any mark old or substantial requires a refinish, otherwise the time and effort spent to repair and blend it in will approach the cost of just refinishing the piece properly.

I purchased my Kolar used and it had a few battle scars when I bought it. After shooting it several years, I was considering the "Finish Repair" route until I saw what that looked like on a number of other guns. As Ian mentioned, the cost was about the same, but the quality and look of a complete refinish made my decision a "no-brainer". I sent the wood to Larry Garroutte who did a phenomenol job repairing the dings and refinishing the wood. The metal went back to Kolar for reblueing. The gun looks and shoots like brand new. In my opinion this is the only way to go....it is your baby we are talking about!

Thanks so much for your thoughts on this Skeet_Man and CapHillSkt and for sharing your experiences; I think the best move will be to leave her with the scars for now, and maybe get the whole stock refinished down the track...they're really not that bad, I think with the high gloss finish they just seemed to stand out a bit more than with other oil finish guns I've had. Happy shooting!

Jim, I'd love to know what it cost to have refinished and re-blued! And, I know EXACTLY how well it shoots!! {hs#

Hi John,
The wood re-finish was $350 not including having the stock glass bedded and a new recoil pad installed. When the barrel was re-blued by Kolar, I had it changed from the matte finish to polished blue ($395). The self guiding radar sighting system is still under development and the price and design is a secret until we get the last few "bugs" out of it....but it does look promising! Missed seeing you at the Bull Run shoot a couple of weeks ago. I understand that you were "Out and About"!
Talk to you later.....Jim
