Longshot powder

I've recently started using a 20 ga semi-auto for skeet, and will start reloading for it. The only powder I could find for 20 ga is Longshot, and bought a pound of it. I have Win 209 primers, CB-1078 wads, and with primarily Gun Club hulls, and a few Winchester Universal hulls. I'll be loading on a MEC 600 jr. that a friend is lending me until I find a used one locally.

For 7/8 oz., the recipes for Gun Clubs on the Hodgdon website call for 17.9 grains, 9,900 PSI, and 1250 fps. If the recipes are the same for AA and Universal hulls, the numbers are 18.6 grains, 10,600 PSI, 1250 fps.

My question is with regards to bushings. I use a 600 Jr in 12 ga, and the bushings I already have are 29~33. Does anyone else use Longshot on a 600 Jr., and if so, what bushing(s) do you use? I guess what I want to know is whether I need to run out and get a smaller one.

You use the same bushings for all MEC reloaders. And yes you will need smaller bushings. MEC's powder/bushing chart gives you the approximate drop that their different bushings throw for a wide variety of powders. You can see the chart at the following URL:

From your post, it looks like you want to drop in the neighborhood of 18 - 18.5 grains of Longshot. Well according to that chart, that would correspond to #16 or #17 bushing. Note these are only starting points, you will need to weigh you powder drops to make sure they are accurate. It would probably be wise to get a bushing a size large and smaller than those.

My original question was: What data is out there for using "Longshot" powder for reloading Steel shot" waterfowl loads for 12gauge/2-3/4"/1-1/8 Oz. steel ? Thanks for any info! 12gauge1

Thanks. In the past, I've found the MEC chart to be almost useless, which is why I decided to ask to see if anyone else is currently using Longshot. I figured I'd try to circumvent using it. :)

Moocher, where did you hear Hodgdon is going to quit making Longshot? I talked to BPI and Hodgdon late last week and no one mentioned they are still making Longshot. A rep at BPI stated she had just gotten off the phone with Hodgdon and they had no idea when they would next ship Longshot; however, BPI did say they expect to get a reasonable size shipment of 800-X in in the next few weeks. You can't back order online, but you can call them for it.

I have had great results using Longshot for 28ga reloading and I'm a little concerned about the shortage. I picked up 5 lbs of Longshot last weekend and I'm picking up two 8lb'ers (maybe three) tomorrow from a source. That, along with the reserve 4lb bottle, should get me through a year and a half to two years of my 28ga skeet shooting.

What I heard was at least 3d hand. A friend likes to work up wildcat rifle loads and he says he is friends with an employee of Hodgdon who also likes to load long range rifle stuff and that employee supposedly told that to my friend.

I certainly can't guarantee the accuracy of information that is 3d hand, but I can't find any Longshot anywhere. I also used to use it in .44 Mag heavy loads for shooting metal plates at 100 and 150 yards.

Longshot is great for 1 1/8 & 1.25 oz. 12 ga. tungsten loads. Also 10 ga., it is pretty versatile stuff. I don't know how it works in 20 ga. 1 or 7/8 oz. loads but I am getting ready to find out. All I have left is Longshot & Promo, aside from a few ounces of miscellaneous others. I hope they aren't going to discontinue it. Sounds like another unfounded rumor to me but a lot of powder I like has been discontinued.

I saw 5lbs ( 5 - 1# bottles) go for $225 on GB last week. Ugggh, that is crazy. I bought a couple of pounds of Unique a few weeks ago, used a MEC #19 bushing in my PW900 and loaded up a flat with CB's WAA28 wad replacement, AA HS hulls and 13.1 of unique ( samples varied between 12.7 and 13.1.) Shot a horrible round, grabbed a box of shells loaded with Longshot and did far better. Took a chrono out and sampled Longshot vs Unique. Unique with a 12 shot sample was running 1025-1175 and Longshot 5 shot sample ran between 1220 - 1268.

My thought was that the Unique might be a bit better with the real WAA28 wads, but I really don't like the way they seat and the fact that Unique is a flake powder with lower number of grains, the variance made more of a difference than the 15.5gr of Longshot. Plus, I thought Unique was pretty dirty vs Longshot (and Longshot isn't the cleanest powder around.)

I have one data point for you: Using the red powder baffle and a 13A bushing my 28 gauge 650 is dropping 14.3 grains of Longshot in progressive mode. The MEC chart says the 13A should drop 15.6 grains. It stays set up on my workbench in my basement where it stays cool and isn't damp.
In my experience all MEC bushings drop about .5 - 1.0 grain light. Probably a liability thing but it is a starting point in the search.

Parachute,

I have used Longshot for 20 ga field loads mostly remington and federal hulls. I reload on a Mec 600. If I remember correctly I drop between 18 and 19 grains. With the red powder baffle I use the #18, #19 or #20 bushing depending on the powder lot number, verified by scale, and what my target drop is for the wad hull combination .

Thanks. It looks as if I'll be buying a bunch of bushings!

The good news is I found 1#ers of Longshot today. The bad news is it was $32.00 per pound. I don't load 20 gauge but a friend does. Called him and he said no way at that price. Cheaper to buy factory. Being that powder isn't a fine adult beverage I didn't look for any dates/vintage on the container.

I wish you had. I saw some Hodgdon product on the shelves today with a 05/14 pack date.
