M-590 Mag Springs

Our department recently purchased twelve 590s. The mag springs originally installed in the guns kinked up severely the first time that they were fully-loaded. Mossberg's L.E. department said that they had a batch of guns go out with defective springs. They sent us 12 new springs. These springs don't kink (so far...), but they are weak as heck. They only stick out of the mag tube about 3 coils when the cap is off. The last shell is barely pushed out of the mag tube onto the carrier when cycled.

I wanted to just replace the springs with springs from Nordic Components, since I use their springs in my competition shotguns. The Command Staff wants Mossberg to fix this, but my argument to that is "They're just gonna send us MORE CRAP."

Does anybody know a "spec" for shotgun mag springs? How much pressure should they exert when fully-relaxed? How many coils should be hanging out when the cap is off?

I have researched this in Armorer's Manuals and the Jerry Kuhnhausen books, but to no avail....

The mag spring needs to extend past the mag tube about 8". I would go with the Wolff universal 12Ga springs. The are very high quality & strong with thin wire coils that are wide set and allow the most room in the mag tube. They come 40" long and need to be cut to size. Cut it to 28" or 29" and bend the ends down closer to the lower coil so they don't stick up. I buy a 100 @ a time. I sale them already sized & shaped for the 590 shotguns.

I would go with the Wolff extra power universal 12Ga spring.

The general rule is 8" past the end of the mag tube for full length mag tubes on all shotguns. It should also work a +1 tube extension.

My experience from sizing a couple hundred of the Wolff extra power springs a year is 28" is the right length for 18" to 20" bbl shotguns with full length mag tubes.

The Wolff springs are very high quality. The wire is thin and very strong and the coils are spaced wide. This allows the most room in the tube when compressed without giving up any strength.

The 590 shotguns are very tight on tube space when fully load with 8 shells. The wolff spring is excellent for the 590 and all shotguns. I have tried different lengths in the 590 and 28" is the prefect length for maximum compression strength. Any longer and you won't get the full 8 round capacity.

I also recommend the Vang stainless open end follower for the 590. The Brownells brand metal followers are very good also. The solid end followers take away space and will cost you a round in "most" shotguns.

Max,
I just ordered the Wolff extra power universal spring. When you mean 28" is the right length for full length mag tubes are you referring to 8 rd. capacity?

My SG (w/the extension) has a 6 rd. mag capacity, so is if fair to say I might need to deduct app. 4.5 inches from the 28"??

Thanks again

If you cut it to 28" and bend the ends down a little you will end up with about 27". I would try that and if it's to strong cut 2 coils off of it. I think it will be fine. Keep in mind it will loose a little Length & strength overtime if left fully loaded due to some settling but that will tapper off. The Wolff spring will last a very long time.

This depends on what follower you are using also. The solid followers take away 1/2" of space in the tube for the spring to compress. I use metal open end followers in all of my shotguns. I have used the solid followers before but went back metal ones.
