Hey guys, that little Portuguese flag will be in my avatar for about 24 more hours, I flew in Sunday morning, to have 2 stocks made, one for flat rib, one for adjustable rib. It’s been a great experience, with top notch service. I’ll give more details later, they should have them checkered, lacquered, and shipped in about two weeks.

I don't have anything that "needs" a new stock right now, but this is very tempting. To go whole hog with a stock maker in the states with a good reputation, get a pattern stock made, and then turn that into an exhibition stock is pushing $10k right now - and will take a year to years. I think the time line for a MR stock is the most tempting aspect.

After a year of debating and doing alot of research, I took the plunge and am in the process of having a stock made. I started shooting SC's about 3 years ago and played with stock set up/dimensions for a year, before settling on the set up I am now shooting. I got measured, by someone that was recommended to me and he said my stock set up was perfect and he wouldn't change a thing (NOTE: I am changing the grip, as I have large hands, but short fingers). SO, I took the measurements, from my stock, and sent them to Ricardo and selected my wood. At this point, they are reviewing my #'s, pictures and videos and hopefully they'll start working on my stock soon. I did call two different custom stock folks, recommended to me by guys that have had stocks built, but never hear back from them.

Hopefully, this route will work out.

I recently went the online route with MR, sending in measurements, videos and pictures. I am pleased with the results. I also have large hands and the grip/palmswell feels great. Sounds like an awesome experience to do the onsite process. I started the online build in late February and received the stock late July. What does the wait time look like for the onsite visit?

They Have wood in grades 2 through 5, Exhibition 1 through Exhibition 5, and Premiere.

Both my blanks were Exhibition 4. Here is the blank with the rough cut of each.....the rough cuts still have a lot of fine sawdust on them, note how tan the recoil pad is...that's actually a very dark chocolate brown color. I took my own Kick Eez recoil pads with me. Once thoroughly cleaned and lacquered, the true color will come back out like the pics of the blank.

By the way, when I say "rough Cut"...those stocks are finished and shootable, custom shaped palm swells, and approved by me as ready for finishing,...... they only need checkering and lacquer.

1. Manuel Ricardo does the actual fitting himself. I had my gun set up the way I've been shooting it for years. They asked me why I wanted a custom, I said I wanted some palm swell, and I didn't want an adjustable recoil pad, I have a lot of toe out, and don't like the way it sticks out, I wanted the wood to have the twist. They said no problem. After mounting many times, with Manuel looking at shoulder fit, looking down barrels at my eye, etc, he agreed the fit was good, and could do the twist and palm swell. They checked fit on both my stocks.

(I traveled with a high rib gun, and took a low rib barrel, and low rib stock, so they could make two stocks.)

2. You can go shoot the stock, and they ask if you want to. But the club doesn't have skeet, and was a 45 minute drive. I decided to trust my fitting, rather than go shoot a discipline I am not normally shooting, and risk doubting the stock because I am missing a lot of targets. The club has trap (bunker) and sporting clays.

3. Preferred airport is Porto (OPO) and an agent their told me they are seeing several hundred guns a year brought in now.

4. There is tourist stuff in Porto for sure. I stayed a little north at the Axis Vermar Hotel and Conference center, right on the beach. Cost of my room was 120 Euro a night. I did not rent a car, and the MR team picked me up and dropped me off each day. I was in the shop for about 3 hours each day, Monday - Thursday. (They also arranged for a transport service to take me from airport to hotel, and vice versa.)
